I have a 45 cal barrel that is 15/16th across the flats, I have been kicking around the idea of having the barrel bored to 58 cal smoothbore as a round ball deer/shot squirrel rifle. Is their enough meat on a 15/16th inch barrel for such a conversion. I cant see much past 60 yards with open sights due to my eyes so I dont feel as the smoothbore would hinder me deer hunting.

Sent my 15/16 s barrel to Bobby Hoyt and asked if it could go 58 cal and he said no way. He's relining back to 54. Not enough meat for 58.

A 58 in a 15/16th barrel reminds me of 50 caliber 13/16 barrels. There were a few of them made, but I would not use one! If my math is correct you would have .178 wall thickness Which leaves little steel for cutting in dovetails to put in mounting lugs. But on the other hand smooth bore will develope less pressure than rifles.
