    Smoothbore rate of twist?

I used to catch fastpitch softball. Knuckballs are very difficult to get right. To get erratic movement there needs to be 0 spin. Any slight spin on the ball will cause it to come straight in and then get smashed out of the infield. :) I doubt a ball shot from a gun will have zero spin with...

    Gunbuilder's bench plans

I know I asked about the bench. Thank you for the post. My workbench is a little tall. I need something like this for my next build.

Trouble seeing sights in the woods

8:15 and 11:00 were the times so low light was not the issue. I will open up the rear sight and use some white out. Thanks

Trouble seeing sights in the woods

I missed two deer this year with my flintlock. I am certain I didn't have the front sight down in my rear notch like it should be and shot over their backs. Had it at the range before hunting and it was dead on. I am thinking I need to deepen and open up my rear notch. As far as the front...

    Hot off the bench.....

Nice gun! That bench looks pretty simple and really functional. I would like to see more pics of it.

    Engraving Ball?

I am wondering if I should just buy an engraving ball or make something to hold pieces. I would love to hear what you do. I am a beginner to engraving. I have cut a few lines screwing the piece to a wood block and putting it in my bench vice. Thanks

    New fullstock flint hawken

I did not apply anything. The parts are 25 yrs old so they had some age to them. I knocked the casting marks off and used a wire wheel. I am going to let it age naturally.

    New fullstock flint hawken

Thanks for the replies. I applied maple magic once and it was awesome. I neutralized it and the color went away. I reapplied and did not neutralize. It turned out darker. (no surprise) The finish is boiled linseed oil and spar varnish (oil based) mixed 50/50. Dries pretty fast.

    New fullstock flint hawken

I finished my Hawken today. I bought it from a friend partially built. I used Maple Magic on the stock. I am going to let the metal age naturally. It is my second build. I still have a lot to learn! Now time to save up for the next one.

NO Black Powder at my Bass Pro

I went to Bass Pro in East Peoria IL yesterday to get some GOEX. I was informed they were phasing it out. They sold the last lb a week ago. Not sure if that is company wide or just not enough demand in my area.

    Stubborn breach plug

Thanks for all the replies. I got the plug out this morning. The ATF and acetone did the trick. That plug was really tight. Had to get it 3/4 the way out before I could turn it by hand. I did the knoxs chamber and got the touch hole liner in. I used a set screw on the advise of Dick...

    Stubborn breach plug

Thanks for the responses. The hole may be far enough back I may have to do a Knox breach like Turpin does in his video. He makes a chamber by drilling through the side and the face of the breach plug.

    Stubborn breach plug

I have a GM barrel with a hook breach that won't come out. The barrel is 25 yrs old but never been shot. I have been soaking it in liquid wrens for a few hours. I can't budge it with a 12 in. Crescent wrench. Do I need to wait longer or heat it up? I need to notch the plug for the touch hole...

    minimum size of blanks

Would a fowler be typically thinner than a Lancaster or a Virginia rifle? I am thinking a jaeger would require much thicker than 2".

    minimum size of blanks

Is there a resource I could review for the minimum size blank I need for a particular style of gun? I keep seeing blanks for sale I am hesitant to pull the trigger. My next build will be a fusil de chasse. Someday I would like to build a jaeger. Thanks
