    Blown Patches ...

Joe....Another thing you might look at is the muzzle crown....The majority of production guns seem to have a marginal crown job at best which leads to cutting the patch on loading.... From the loading/shooting data you have given, believe the guys are right on a too thin of patch...I have found...

    1859 sharps

I went to the Shilo site and waited 10 minutes for their "moving picture show" to load..Could not find any forum, so I'll tell you what I know about what I believe is you question.... The fouling I believe your trying to reduce/eliminate has to do with the breech block getting tighter and...

    Leman rifle kit?

Shorten' up that 36 inch barrel to 32 to 33 inches...Believe you'll be alot happier with it in the long run..I have a 36 inch 58 cal in a Hawken full stock flinter that is just a little too much...Wish it was 32 inches...I am old too and get tired after only 1/2 dozen shots any more... :winking...

    tipi or wall tent

Have used white canvas wall tents for both hunting camp and rondevous...Would recommend a wall tent for hunting modern and get the frame with it if you can afford it...Takes time to find and cut poles in the wild and you need to set it up a few times before the trip to make sure you've got...

Moose with my .50 or .54

They is a lot to be said about "If they're still standing, KEEP SHOOTIN'"...I would take that a bit farther and say "If they're still MOVING, KEEP SHOOTIN'", and always reload immediately after that first shot....That first shot is always the most important, make it the best one... :winking...

who's got a 58 cal "hawkin" type caplock?

Have been shooting a 58 cal full stock Hawken flinter for rendz and hunting for the passed 15 years...Has a 36 inch, 1" AF Green River Rifle Works barrel with 1 in 72 twist... Shoot .575 round ball with 60 grain FFg and 90 grain FFg with a tight pillow tic patch for woods walks and "gallery"...

    rifling twists

They are kind of interrelated...In a short barreled 62 caliber in a 1 in 72 twist you may not be able to shoot enough powder to gain/get an accurate AND powderfull load... Say you load up with a 140 grain FFG load in a 62 cal, 36 inch barrel with a 1 in 72 twist....Your going to get the...

    rifling twists

I agree with Johnny....IMO for round ball shooting under 45 cal and especially 40 and below 1 in 48...45 to 54, 1 in 66...58 and up, 1 in 72...This not to say that faster or slower twists won't work, but they seem to get pretty tempermental if you get out of the more idea twist range...Meaning...

    Entry pipe on a Hawken?

Don't believe I have seen or have heard of any reference to the "Hawken" pattern rifle in haft or full stock without and entry thimble and fore end cap...With the demand for less expensive rifles and to be able to make a living, I am sure the Hawken shop made less expensive "plains" rifles with...

    58cal. loads

I use the same 58 cal load in my Hawken full stock flinter for muleys, elk, antelope, and bear...36 inch GRRW barre with 1 in 72 twist...540 round ball with 120 grains of FFg GOEX...Targets and woods walks under 50 yard, 60 grain load, 80 yard and out 90 grains...Medium well washed and dry...

    Brass front sight

I like a fairly thick front sight with a small ivory square piece set in the top/back...Shows up nice in most all lighting conditions with no glare and gives me an idea of how much more front sight to hold for those longer shots...The Lizard...

    Entry pipe on a Hawken?

Believe Bill has got it right...Orginals were made from sheet material formed to the entry thimble shape and the stock/ramrod hole configuration, same with the nose caps...You'll see some investment case stuff out the now, but it always seems to have a heavy appearance once installed...Also they...

    hammer to nipple alignment

The hammer throw looks short and the angle of the hammer hose is off too...Don't believe you can change the angle of the nipple threads in the breech without major work, which would fix the whole thing... You can either try a different hammer with a longer throw and also heat and bent the nose...

    Sights

IMO, regardless of what anyone will tell you or believe they are telling you, no one can see the target, front sight, and the rear open sight all at the same time clearly...Your eyes just don't have the depth of vision to deal with all three... Need to consentrate on the target and front sight...

    barrell fresh

Working with an old barrel bore can be done as the material used back then and rifling process of cutting the bore and grooves was the standard method...Todays barrels are not always cut, but button rifled...Works for rifling that is pretty shallow for work with bullets... Trying to work with...

    lapping compounds

John has got it pretty much spelled out...Get a copy of the book from the muzzle loading ass titled "Shooting and Winning with the Champions"...Good section in there on lapping, rods, lead lapps and brass lapps and how to rum them... To really get with it and uniform the bore (top of the lands)...

    IDFG may reconsider ML rules

The state of Colorado knuckled under years ago and allowed inline muzzle loaders as the inline manufacturer's brought pressure to bare by suggesting a court battle if they were "outlawed"... As has been said before, "there is no such thing as an "improved" muzzleloader as all were invented and...

    other big game

Hunted mountain goat in Colorado in 1992..Took 3 years to draw the license...Managed to harvest a nice goat at about 40 yards with a 58 cal Hawken flinter I built just for that hunt... In 2003, hunted bighorn sheep in Colorado high county...Took 14 years to draw the license...Managed to harvest...

    No more odd sized molds?

Just a sign of the times...No call for them so why makem'?...Too many inline sabot/bullet shooters with predictable bore sizes where you can sell a projectile at $1.00 or more a piece...No need for odd round ball molds... :winking: ...The Lizard...
