    Flintlock rifles in Alaska

I am sure that explosives are flown to the Canadian north for mining purposes. It could be argue that most mining explosives are "less" dangerous to transport than black powder. But what about detonators and primers ? Modern explosives are notorious for being stable and hard to detonate without...

What's the farthest you've ever shot with a long rifle?

Mine was 265 yds groundhog hunting back in 2006 or 2007, missed by 1 inch. Never again was able or willing to duplicate that . Was total fluke , but I'm still amazed at what a .45 round ball can do.

    Patch's won't come clean

funny topic here. I am running an experiment going into the 4th year and counting. I made a small cannon for July 1st Canada Day. Lots of fun and great noise and air burst loads that can be heard for some distance. Now , this is the ongoing experiment : I decided NOT to clean the cannon AT ALL...

    Ramrod launch

A very long time ago, back in early '80s, I got a rod stuck so hard that I decided to just shoot it. It was a wood range rod ,and it disintegrated into splinters in mid flight. Wiped the bore clean , and kept shooting as if nothing happened. No one around made anything out of it when I told them...

How Many Process Their Own Game?

I do all my game, sometimes where it fell , sometimes in my shop. To me is just as much part of the hunt, as it is enjoying cooking it for my family and friends. It kind of completes the cycle of life.

A Charleville 1814 Musket HIGH QUALITY

Very good work! Very few if any , noticed the Argentina national anthem . Thank you for that sir! I used to know the men in charge of the collection of the Museo de Armas de la Nacion, Ing Chavez, and Saul Braseras. That was in the late '70s and early '80s. I was a member of the Tiro Federal...

    Yearly powder usage

hard to say,but if I had to guess , about 4 to 7 pounds. I just went to check , and found 26 cans empty from the last 3 years or so. I have a 50 yrd range in the back yard and go often for small game. Someone told me to keep the empties to buy loose powder by the case because is cheaper. It...

    Muzzle velocity

Yes it was, my other 45 with a 42 inch barrel(a Pedersoli), can only do 1850 fps wit a 90 grains of 3f. My 54 can do also 1850 fps with 120 grains of 3f. I spent many afternoons at the range with the crony going thru most of my guns while working up a load. I don't care anymore about the speed ...

    Muzzle velocity

.45 cal, 2100 fps with 75 grains FFFG and spit patch, 44 inch long green mountain barrel . flintlock and a flat face breech with a .050 white liner touch hole. Or 1244 foot pounds at the muzzle. 27 grains FFFG , gives me just shy of 400 FPE at the muzzle, wich is the legal limit for small game...

    Middlesex Village Trading Co

I bought from these people once. The quality was just about the worse I have ever seen. Not worth the money. that was the last time in my life I buy anything from them, and I kept the stuff to show other people why they should NEVER buy anything from them. Wish you luck if you do.

Do you use your flintlock for all seasons?

I'm confused :idunno: Is there some other kind of gun that is NOT a flintlock? The other weapon I know is my traditional bow, but they don't let me use it for guns only seasons

    Shot and cleaned squirrel

I use only a .45 for squirrels. Two loads depending on the area, PRB or #5 shot.Yes out of a rifle barrel , and it works just like a modern .410. 25 grains of FFFG for PRB and 40 grains for a square load of #5s. No mess , no meat loss , and more than 100 squirrels fell to these loads from my...

    Overkill

I've taken over 75 squirrels with my .45 , and the worse of them had two legs blown off, most were just through holes and little or no meat loss. Mind you, I use only 23 grains of FFFG.

    Slow Match

You cannot get saltpeter in Canada, and stump remover is also illegal here. On the flip side,a 20 mm gun is NOT a destructive device, or a 105 mm howitzer for that matter. It looks that politicians are more concerned with stump removers here for some reason :idunno:

    Slow Match

You already have the chemicals in your powder horn. Black powder is 75 % saltpeter, and the only ingredient soluble in water. Add some black powder to water, dissolve, filter thru multiple layers of coffee filter . Done ! You want to filter it really good to separate the ingredients. Add cotton...

    Squirrel/small game gun

My everything gun is a .45, and my loads go from 23 grains FFFG (about 950 fps) to 80 grains FFFG ( about 2200 fps). I've taken small game with both loads, however, at the upper end, you do not want to miss the head of a squirrel. There is nothing left, just pieces hanging from some branches and...

Breech Plug / liner safety question...

New barrel and plug .You could reuse the barrel , but you have to move all the lugs to the old position, or re-drill the stock to the new position. If you cant or know how to do it yourself , send it to a good gunsmith and pass the bill to the guy the screwed your gun. Or have such guy pay for a...

    Extremely cold weather hunting

I understand all that has been said here, and most of the old timers are correct. However (I may be old but not an old timer) , I do bring the gun inside the trailer at night.Even at -18C, or 0 F . It never got wet or failed to fire. I seal the pan with bore butter and use over powder wads...

    Broken main spring

Well, I just ordered a lock and all the spare springs. The fastest I can get it in Canada is a good 10 to 15 days. I use the gun quite a lot, as I have a range in the back yard. The problem is that it is my hunting gun as well. Some 20 plus years ago I had to cut short ( on the second day) a...

    Broken main spring

Wow , thanks I'm the kind of person that cannot afford that kind of turn around time, so I will buy a new lock , all the spare springs for such lock, spring steel stock (just in case), and replace the entire lock. That requires to do all the tuning that I have done to the old lock ( case harden...
