    Making antler powder measures

Maybe the antler I've used was old or something.... But I just used a screwdriver and twisted it back and forth, got out almost all of the inside "pith"... The screwdriver wasn't sharp enough to cut into the outside of the antler, but it cleaned up the inside nicely..... The screwdriver also...

I wanted to "back date" a machette..... They are period for Buccaneering...... (the time period that I do......) Took off the plastic handle, and replaced it with rawhide covered wood..... OK... it's still a machette...... But I've been having some fun grinding down old kitchen...

    scalplocks

Icelandic sheepskin cut into small (scalp sized) pieces works really well..... and it comes in different natural colors.... unfortunatly, it's not really long enough for an ex-longhaired person.... I've made them for Monster costumes.... but painting on a layer of fake blood, and letting it...

    brain tanning

I brain tanned two hides a few years ago.... used pig brains from the grocery store, mashed up in water, and put the hides in overnight.... The next morning........ AAAAACK THE SMELL.... worse smell in the world.... After working the hides, the smell kinda skuck, I smelled like a ghoul for the...

I had a haversack that I painted with black latex paint, and I have used oil based paint to waterproof some of my Pyrate stuff (some tarpline hats and a ditty bag).... both will stiffen the canvas, but both worked well....

    diamond shelters

This gets kinda funny.... I have a light weight tarp that I use for Buccaneer.... I use a sail when I'm camping as a Pyrate..... anyway... both are made outta cotton.... cotton isn't period for the time I'm doing..... I have to look up (well ask someone that knows her fabric) if I can shrink...

This isn't a "trekking stick".... but as I posted in the other thread about trekking sticks... period sailors/pyrates used them.... anyway... here's a picture of one that I made.... I don't know what kinda wood it is, but it was a chunka sapling and some of the root for the handle.....

I want to make my own equipment.

The Mountain Man's sketch book by James A. Hanson and Kathryn J. Wilson (Volume I and II) are good.... They show drawings of period items,(They don't tell you how to make it... just what was made...) You can use the drawings as a base to make some of you own stuff... The books are inexpensive...

    oil canvas?

I forgot to mention..... you gotta pre-shrink the canvas befor you use it..... run it through the waRshing maching on hot, then dry it on Hot, so the fibers shrink and close-up.... Do this befor you cut-out your tarp..... When it rains, the canvas gets wet, but unless it is really pouring (then...

    Cooking Coffee

I use to use an old Foster's beer can (back when they were made out of steal, not alluminum)... cut the top off with a can opener so there was a slightly ragged edge. Poked two holes near the top and added a wire bail... Boiled the coffee, added some cold water to settle the grouds, and then...

    oil canvas?

I don't waterproof tarps... it adds too much weight. The tarp dosen't stop the rain, it just slows it down....I use a linseed oilded ground cloth to stop any "mist" or drips to keep dry. If you live somewhere that it rains buckets... then the extra weight may be necessary tho....

    What size diamond shelter?

On my sail/tarp I used hand sewn groummets, and it works, but you have to carry some extra line to set it up. I have also made ties for a light tarp, and a lean-to that were just some of the cloth folded in on inself so there were no raw edges, and stitched them, I kinka like the ties, they are...

    Use for Bone?

Does anyone know what part of a cow's bones are the thickest? I saw a really cool early period pocket knife with a bone handle, and would like to make something similar, but I'd need a slab of bone about 1/2" thick...

    Making a Waterproof Trekking Tarp

I can’t figure why anyone would want to waterproof their tarp”¦ it just makes it soooo much heavier. (Well unless they live where it rains buckets all at once”¦) I just pre-shrink the canvas and leave it at that. I DO waterproof my ground cloth tho”¦ The tarp “slows down” the rain, and my...

    Tarp shelter set up style

These are three of the shelters set-up at Pirates in Paradise... The one on the left (mine) is a hand sewn sail, set-up as a lean-to. Jins is set-up as a wedge, He uses a board that is proped up with an oar for the ridge pole, the board bends, so that is why it has that interesting ridge...
