    French flints from TOTW

I got some French flints from TOTW this week. I ordered the FLINT-FR-6 which were $.99 each opposed to the FLINT-AMBER-6 which are $1.80 each. They both measure the same size. Anybody know what the difference is? The flints I received are knapped perfectly. They have nice flat tops and perfect...

    My latest project

Old Investarms Hawken rebuild. My buddy bought it on an auction site. I've never seen one like this. Maybe it's not entirely Investarms but it did have an Investarms barrel. I like the patch box. When originally built it was literally taken from the box and all the furniture screwed on and wood...

    Neutralizing LMF solution

Hey guys, I have a barrel browning with LMF and I don't have any baking soda in the house. Is there anything else that will neutralize LMF solution? HD

    Vent liner size?

Hey Gents, I'm refinishing an old CVA for a buddy of mine and the vent liner is rusted in place. I've gone through all the standard removal attempts to no avail. I have to drill it out. Assuming it's the usual 6x1mm metric that CVA uses, what is the correct thread to drill it out and thread it...

    Scott wowed them at Dixon's!

Scott, I don't want to steal your thunder but I have to tell the guys! Congratulations! Contemporary category... Special blue ribbon awards... Ribbon for Best Folk Art... I am thrilled that Scott did so well at Dixon's especially since it was the horn he made for me that knocked...

    My horn and strap

Many of you have already seen my amazing horn made by Scott. Now Brett has made me an amazing strap to go with it. They are both going to make an appearance at Dixon's this month. Scott and Brett, you are both fine craftsmen! HD

I need ideas for a horn strap

Scott made me this amazing horn. I need ideas for a strap. Leather? Woven? I have several yards of 1/8 inch leather strap. I thought of braiding it. Ideas please! This horn needs a strap that will compliment it without detracting from it's beauty. HD

    Calling all New Yorkers

I was born and raised upstate in Hudson Falls. Since I just retired from the Air Force we're thinking of moving back home so our kids can get to know my family better. I know we have some New York members. Let's see who we've got. I'd like to meet some of y'all sometime! :hatsoff: HD

My two cents on ignition speed

Ignition speed doesn't matter. If you don't have proper shooting technique nothing else matters. Your flintlock can fire as fast as a centerfire (yeah right!) but if you don't have follow-through you won't have good groups or dead deer. All the talk about ignition speed is pure poo in my...

    REAL's at 100

Okay, first off I know it's no big deal to shoot at 100 yards. Most people do it all the time, some people shoot farther. I however do not. I dial my rifles in at 50 and try to keep my hunting shots at 50 or less, 75 max. For unforeseen reasons I had to shoot at 100 yards today instead of 50. I...

    Buffalo Bullets secret lube

Does anyone have a clue as to what the sticky lube is on Ball-ets? It's a trade secret but somebody must have an idea what it is. All I know is it remains stable over years and years. HD

    Love thy dentist

Got another batch of lead foil from our family dentist the other day. I just melted it down and got 20 pounds of ingots. At this rate (20 pounds every 6 months) I'll be stocked up on lead for life. Heck, I already have 600 pounds of telephone cable lead. I better get out shooting more often. HD

Mould question...How to widen sprue hole?

What is the best way to open up the sprue hole on a mould? I'm pouring 400+ grain bullets and the mould doesn't fill fast enough. The lead doesn't pour through the small hole fast enough. I was going to drill it but didn't want to bugger it up. I thought removing the plate from the mould and...

    First run of Maxi-Hunters

Got the mold Monday. Ran a test batch today. Weighed them and they tip the scale at 457 grains. The only Maxi-Hunter offering I have seen in .54 is 435 grains. Now this mould is brand new old stock. Anybody know if there used to be more than just the 435 grain Maxi-Hunters back in the day? HD

    Finally getting a Maxi-Hunter mold!

I have been trying for years to get my hands on a T/C Maxi-Hunter bullet mold in .54 cal. FINALLY after all this time I catch one on FleaBay and get it for a descent price. They have been going for $80-90+ and I caught it for under $60 w/free shipping. Not bad IMO for a VERY hard to get mold...

    Shortening vent liner

The vent liners I use extend into the powder chamber causing a fouling buildup and misfires after a few shots. What would be a good way to shorten my vent liner so it only goes in to the edge of the powder chamber? I tried cutting one shorter with my Dremmel but I buggered it up even with it...

Depth of threads on Lyman barrels

Does anyone know the depth of the threads on Lyman barrels for the vent liner from the flat to the inside of the breech? I start getting misfires after ten or so shots and I think fouling might be accumulating around the vent liner inside the breech. All I could figure is the liner is...
