    Any Flintlock gunsmith's in KY?

Lots of people like the Laurel Mountain browning solution so I can't really say there is anything wrong with it but I have had much better success with the Wakon Bay solution sold by Mike Lea. It's especially good if you wait till good old hot, humid Ky summer. Good luck. Bill

    In line flintlock

The old Hall breachloader was sort of an inline flintlock. The only one I've seen first hand had been converted to percussion and that was about 30 years ago so I'm a little fuzzy.

    Mistake made with flintlock

I have to agree with Jack. Half cock is not a safety. Lower the cock all the way and plug that vent. I know the odds are high that the frizzen could get bumped closed, the half cock fail and a spark land right in the touch hole all at the same time but why risk it? I once lowered the cock to...

Colonial Virginia lock or round faced English

I have a Colonial Va lock on my 54 and it is very reliable. I would think on a smooth rifle that the plainer lock would be more appropriate and certainly easier to polish. Haveing said that I have one of the Roundface English locks for a future fowler project and really one would work as good as...

    Helicoil nipple?

I didn't notice the 5/16-24. I feel that would be better as you get more threads contacting also fine threads seem to stay tight better. Bill

    Helicoil nipple?

Just checked. Track has 5/16-18 npples to fit No.11 percusion caps. If you got room for a helicoil you got room for one of those. Bill

    Helicoil nipple?

My point exactly. Keep in mind also that helicoils are supposed to bottom out on the threads in the main piece. If the part is tapped freely through then the insert can move up and down. In years past I have removed many messed up helicoils that came out looking like bent up wires. Our toolroom...

    Helicoil nipple?

Having worked in the Tool and Die tade for thirty two years I feel that helicoils are about the worst thread inserts out there and I certainly would'nt trust my safety or that of bystanders to one in a firearm. I would put on a new drum or if it's a patent breach fit a new breach. Another...

    Flintlock Bedford Rifle

Zonie, Your post turned a light on in my head.As soon as I read this I got out my old copy and found ones on pages 6,8,10,12 and 16 that appear to have holes plugged up for frizzen screws along with frizzen spring screws and studs. In other words they were converted to percussion. Whether the...

    toe plate patch box

Just like 54ball said I think he was referring to a simple two piece patch box mounted in place of a toe plate with a Tenn. style external nail type catch. Clear as mud? The one I saw that Hershal made is on what is called the Spears rifle.

    toe plate patch box

I have seen examples done by both Hershel House and Steve Davis. Perhaps a search of these gentlemens work might turn up a picture. Best of luck. Bill

    Finishing lock parts

A square graver held at an angle too steep for actual engaveing does a great job. Think digging in rather than cutting a line. The first engraveing chisel I ever made is much too heavy and clumsy for it's intended purpose but does great for this job. BTW be careful of those teeth around your...

    I.D. This Lock

Just because it has the old style cock screw doesn't mean it is pre Chambers. It only means they didn't assemble it. Chambers still puts that type of screw in the casting kits. BTW you can chuck it in a drill or better yet lathe and file those ugly angles into a dome. The cock can be re shaped...

    Patch box question?

Holding snacks is a function. :) I put spare flints in mine.

    Cleaning brass without harming wood

If its the same Mike Lee that makes the Wakon Bay browning solution I would bet its a real nice piece. I like the aged look myself but cleaning it up should show off any engraving better. Not really much help, just rambling.

    Is this a Siler lock

Could it be a Doc Haddaway? Saw one once but its been too long ago to say for sure. :idunno:

    Iowa Dove Season

Glad to hear they changed the rules. Here in Kentucky there are a couple of waterfowl areas run by the Ky F&G where they put on dove shoots every year and you have to use non toxic in those specific spots. Other than that it's lead all the way and I hope it stays like that.

    Pin drilling fixture

Thats the one! I remember those little planes. Thanks. :hatsoff:

    Another E.Va Born at TVM

By the late 70's Hershel tended to build one of two styles of rifle which he called early Va and the other South West Va. Those seem to be just labels for his own style as I cannot find any originals that fit those molds but I really like his work. Looks like a lot of other people do too...

    Pin drilling fixture

Thanks. That gives me something to go on. I may give this a whirl as a lunch time Gov. job but would be a lot easier just to buy one.
