Looking for information on this firearm

I have come into possession of what I believe to be a .62 cal musket. Pictures will follow. The lock is marked “Savage RFA Co” with “Middletown CT” under that. Behind the hammer is the year “1868”. In front of the hammer it has the letters “US” under an Eagle. Butt plate has “US” on the top...

    Question on value.

Would it hurt the value of an original rifle if I had Hoyt rebore and rifle the barrel to a caliber that was original to the makers calibers. Just wondering. We discussed this this morning at the coffee shop and had 2 different opinions.

    Bag mold caliber

I bought a box of stuff at a real estate auction to get a bag mold that was in the box. I couldn’t get my hands on the mold to see what caliber it was. After I got it I cleaned it up and poured lead in it I measured the ball and found it to be .405. Too big for a .40 and too small for a 41...

    Found in antique shop

Found this in an antique shop. Full of shot. Anybody ever seen a horn like this. Made out of copper and soldered. No rivets. About 8” tall and a little over 2” at base.

    J. Henry & Son lock problem

Just received word today that the lock off of my J. Henry & Son rifle is beyond any reasonable repair. Would anybody have an idea where I could find a replacement lock or a lock that could be made to work on this rifle. It’s a .30 cal. percussion rifle.

    Round ball spin.

Question this morning at the coffee shop about round ball spin. Does a round ball out of a rifled barrel spin on one axis only or will it “tumble”? Reason for asking is we are discussing putting a hollow point type of hole in a round ball. I know this is probably a worthless idea but it is a...

    Home made caps

Received a cap maker for Christmas and have already made about 50 caps. So far they are working fine but was wondering about production procedures of these caps. The kit comes with a compound that you mix together for the caps. What I was wondering about is there are 4 parts that you mix...

    J Henry & Son

I recently acquired an original J Henry & son rifle. Thought it was a .32 but after extensive cleaning the barrel measures right at .303 on the lands. I guess that would make this rifle a .30 cal. Haven’t looked for a round ball mold for a .30 yet but found .283 round balls at Track of the Wolf...

    CVA revolver

Have a friend that has come across a CVA .36 cal revolver with serial number in the 1700’s. What year did CVA begin making revolvers. It doesn’t have any billboard writing on the gun anywhere.

    Latest purchase

Just purchased a Thompson Center Cal 50 rifle over the weekend and I am trying to determine approximately what year it was manufactured. It has a 5 digit serial number beginning with 43. There is no “K” in front of the number. It has a couple of proof stamps under the barrel in front of the...

Boy did I get lucky or what

Latched onto this today. Basically had it given to me. Never had one and probably will wish I didn’t have this one. Of course it was loaded in all 4 barrels. I had to grease gun the loads out. Luckily not that much of a mess. I will take it out and shoot it tomorrow. .36 caliber and will load it...

1855 Musket Cartridge Box strap attachment.

Tried to post this earlier and don’t know where it went. I received an 1855 musket cartridge box for Christmas and for the life of me I can’t figure out how the strap attached to this box. Probably simple as pie but apparently I am suffering a brain fart and can’t figure it out. If any of the...

    Musket cartridge box strap

I received an 1855/1864 musket cartridge box for Christmas and I’m trying to figure out how to attach the strap to the box. This box came from Dixie Gun Works. Would any of the members here have any idea how this strap is attached? Pictures of the strap attached to the box would be a great help...

    Manchero .54

I traded for a Manchero .54 cal. rifle in the Sharps style this morning. I have no idea how to load this monster. Looks like I’m going to have to buy some kind of cartridge case to load it. Any help with this rifle would be greatly appreciated.
