    RIP Chuck Burrows (La Bonte)

I only know of him from his posts on the forums and if he had a post I knew it would be a good one. He never tied to slam anyone like some folks do and was a wealth of knowledge. I learned alot from him and wish I could have met him. Well maybe someday. RIP Chuck and prayers for his family and...

How to load and store your rifle during hunting season

I pretty much do the same. I was wondering what you plug the touch hole with. I will usually tear off a little peace of electrical tape and stick on it. We just got back from Colorado and I noticed I had a little bit of surface rust on the barrel where part of the tape wasn't stuck good. It...

    made meat

Congrats again, You are one lucky man. And I am one gealous man. Anyhow if you don't mind me asking what kind of barrel is on your rifle? I havn't heard of a .54 in a 7/8" barrel. Is it a custom or did someone get happy with a file? Bet it's nice and light. Thanks Dew

    Aquafortis gone bad?

I have only used AF one time on my last build so I am no expert. But I noticed after I put it on the stock and heated it with the heat gun it had a green color that I didn't want. So I hit it again with the heat gun and it got darker and the green went away. I then gave it a water and baking...

    got elk

Glad to see someone had some luck. What is that,# 50 or so? A friend of mine went out there but didn't get to hunt much because of all the rain. He is in his 70's and takes his mule out there. I'm hoping to try it again in a year or two. Thanks for the great pics.

weather proofness of various wood finishes

Ive used spar varnish mixed with alittle blo with pretty good results. As far as weather proofing I don't think you can do much better than spar varnish. I believe its intended for outdoor and marine use. Mixing it with a little blo makes it a little less tacky. It can be shiney but you can tone...

Most comfortable stock in your opinion

I think it may have alot to do with how you are built. I shoot almost everything off of my arm when I am shooting off hand weather its got a flat butt or a cresent. It comes up to my eye and I don't have to scrunch up on the stock. If I try to shoot the other way it doesn't feel as natural and I...

    Hey this stuff really works!!

I like to use boiled linseed oil on the parts after I use a baking soda wash. I also like to use hot water with the wash and rub the oil in them while the metal is warm.

    Colerain Barrel Issues!!!

I also have a 38" .54 colrain on a rifle I built last year. I probably have put about 100 rnds through it so far and it shoots good. I have used 80 to 100 grns ff goex and cotton duck patches and a .530 ball. I think it likes the 80 grns. the best but I need to shoot it some more. Shot good at...

    Colerain Barrel Issues!!!

I have a barrel that had a bad spot in it just above the powder charge. Once I shot a few times it would get harder to seat the ball and I even broke a ramrod on it. I got tired of messing with it and sent it to the barrel maker and it turned out that it had a bad spot under the lug. Infact it...

Fullstock "Hawken" done as she gets..

Thats what I thought it looked like. I havn't seen one like that before. Usually put one through the lock bolster.

Fullstock "Hawken" done as she gets..

Just curious. Do you have 2 lock bolts and are both going through the lockplate instead of 1 going through the bolster?

    Hatfield Plains Rifle

Hatfield did make a halfstock that they called there mountain rifle. I saw one a few years ago at a show in a .50. If I remember right it was a flint. Nice looking rifle but thats about all I know about it. I beleive it was made in the U.S. and had good parts. I tried to buy it but the guy...

Where to Find Green Mtn Flintlock Barrel

Might check with TC. I know they used to make round ball barrels in flint. I had one on a renagade,1-66 twist, 30 in. long. That was before they sold out to Smith & Wesson so I'm not sure if they still offer them.

    solder paste

I don't know about the stuff that track sells but I've used swift solder paste on pipes and some lugs. You just put it on and heat it with a torch. I ordered it from Brownells. Good luck.

    big bunny

Need to write that recipe down. I love cooking in dutch ovens. Course around here I'd need 2 or 3 bunnys to get enough meat as 1 of your bunnyzillas!

    .570 or .575 Round Ball

I havn't tried a .575 although I would like to try them. I shoot .570's with cotton duck patches. Its a tight load but I have had very good accuracy with this combo. You can try local gun shows for rb moulds. I Have gotten some real good deals on Lyman molds there.

    Squirrel hunting IN Colorado?

I havn't tried any when Iv'e been out there. Just thought I'd ask the locals cause you all ought to know. Around here we have alot of red and some fox squirrels. I am not familiar with alberts, glad to know they all taste good. I used to hunt them alot when I was younger. I'm gathering parts to...

    Kansas ML Shops

Not trying to argue here but what ever they are called they do have blackpowder supplies and guns. I have the same phone# that you have for them.

    Kansas ML Shops

No, I'm pretty sure it is James Country Muzzleloading. I went out to the Salina show and he was there. Had alot of blackpowder stuff and quite a few guns as well. Said he was located on the square in Liberty. Also seen him at a gunshow down in Springfield Mo. a couple of years ago.
