Paul arnt we required by law to report all explosives on the 911 information paper?I did and also talked to the local fire department to see if it were ok to store blackpowder in the garage. I know i could have other things out there in the garage that could go boom in a fire but im guesen...

    Investarms .50 gone crazy???

Could also be the pyrodex.I had one of them modern new fangeled muzzleloaders that would drive em at 100 yards with open sights,a month later i couldnt even hardly hit paper at 50 yards. Ended up being the pryro poop.Ive had triple seven that is 3 years old and it was still good. Why the...

    conicals in 1-66 twist

I had a lyman plains rifle in 54 cal that would clover leaf at 50 yards shooting hornady plains bullets with 60 to 65 grains of 3f.Any more powder and it would lead the barrel.I never tried it at anymore distance than 50 yards.I also tried maxiballs and the hunter bullets which all tumbled...

    Traditions Penn. Long Rifle-Muzzle heavy?

Well i will be the first to say it.Dont waste your money on a Traditions in flint.I have a shennadoa which is the same lock and vent liner.Problem one is the patten breech is very small on these rifles, problem two is the vent liner is too small and long causing a fuse effect.First i drilled the...

    brake cleaner or alcohol

Brake cleaner can effect your central nervous system if enough is absorbed into your skin. Its nasty stuff and you run a high risk over time.Rubing alkey,70 or 90 % is what most use.Denatured cost more and has no water in it.All 3 are very flamable.

    Gun Cleaning---AGAIN!!

We all know black powder fouling is acidic, water breaks down fouling easly. If a heaver lube or wax is used for patch lube it becomes hard to remove with just water so soap is used to help break it down. When ther soap is used it takes the acidic barrel a turns it into base. You went from a -4 on...

    Runnin' ball - light pitting

Never cast a ball or bullit in my life but im around iron castings. If it were a casting it looks to be slag, which needs skimed off the metal before its poured.Id reckon its the same with lead.Always keep the sprue full of hot metal from the time you start pouring the mold till its completly...

Using alcohol for cleaning bore ???

I have used alkey for removing moisture untill i found out alkey is acidic compared to water.Dont seem right to me to bring my bore to a netural ph and then add a mild acid.

    Mineral Oil?

:hmm: i will add it to my list of good things that can kill me

    Mineral Oil?

Mineral oil will not mix with water or rubbing alkey or most likely any liquid.Tryed it before. For mineral oil to be able to mix with water it must be put threw a proccess to make it water soulable. Some thing most of us are not able to do unless we own a chemical plant. :haha: Really if you...

    Petroleum vs vegetable oil

From what i have read it has to do with the number of carbon atoms and hydrgen atoms and their bonds. The fats in the oils also maybe.I have yet to see a can of 10w30 that says how much fat is in it. To use petro oil as a patch lube it has to go threw a process that makes it water soulable like a...

How to keep ML rust free

A couple of good points touched upon is you dont need boiling hot water, room temp or even cold work fine. After using soapy water, rinse the barrel good with just straight water. Dry patch it dry. When you think the last patch is completely dry,do one more. Just about any oil or grease will...

    Cleaning Solvent

Been 3 weeks since ive cleaned my gun with the the 10 to 1 moose milk.Never put anything in the bore at all after dry patching it out.I ran a dry patch down the bore about once a week to check for any signs of red or brown or anything. The patch just comes out clean and dry as can be.Dont get...

Id feel right at home with them old boys from back in 1943,thats the way muzzleloading sould be as far as i feel. Now days it seems to be something much more different. Anyways here is a group that is about as traditional as it gets for the mountain man era. Take a real comitment to become a...

    Cleaning Solvent

err maybe 21 cents for 11 ounces of patch lube and cleaner and having a barrel that requires nothing in the bore what so ever to protect it from rust. Yes water works well, why because it is a netural ph pretty much. When soap is added it becomes basic.Which wont hurt nothing as long as it is...

    Cleaning Solvent

A good cheap cleaner besides water is napa 765-1525 cutting and grinding oil.Napa can order a gallon for you at around 27 dollars.I mix 1 part oil to 10 parts warm water when mixing. Its all i use anymore for patch lube. Then i use the same mix for cleaning. I cleaned my gun a week ago after...

    brasso down the barrel

msds shows some ammonium hydroxide, which if too much could cause it rust up.Also has silca cyristal or some thing which would be a abrassive.

    brasso down the barrel

Dont know but on the can it says ok for stainless steel. Your barrel isnt stainless steel so I would keep a close eye on the bore.On the ph scale if brasso is too basic or too acidic it will rust the bore real quick.Run a white cleaning patch down the bore after a couple of hours,if ok do it...
