Managing that dang tar in patent breech?

I have a new pederasoli Kentucky with a patent breech. It is very high humidity here in South East Texas. Like on my trade gun it builds up a tar like substance in the pan and breech. I usually wipe the pan and swab the bore ever so often to stop it from fouling the powder. Yesterday after...

    Pedersoli or TVM

I need some feed back. I am in the market for a flintlock rifle. I have 2 percussion rifles and a trade gun with a L&R lock, I love all 3. Now I want a flint lock rifle. Pederasoli Kentucky less than half of what a tvm would cost me. However the twist rate is 1:48 on the 50, and I only...

    40 cal uses?

I was doing some reading on some of the first settlers that came into deep east Texas back in the late 1700's and the few descriptions of the guns used was that they were primarily 36 to 40 cal rifles. nothing was mentioned of fowlers just small caliber rifles since lead was hard to come by...

Who says they are hard to clean?

Every time I tell someone I shoot muzzleloaders I hear how they are too hard to clean. Well with only 6 patches my trade gun is clean. The marks seen on the last two were from the jag not the bore. In fact BP cleans faster than my ar15 bore. Do you guys have simular results. I put hot water...

    TOW to the rescue!

I have a 62 cal that was just shooting bad low no matter the charge or ball fit. I was using wool, cut paper, Spanish moss and a ton of other things with no improvement. Well yesterday I got in some TOW. On a side note being a pilgram I had no idea how much 6 four ounce bags really is, won't...

    Reusing lead bullets.

Quick question. I am wanting to get a bag mold to make some balls for my trade gun the old way. I have some lead bullets (about 150) that are left over from when I was reloading for my 4570 which I no longer own. They are lubed. Could I use these? I have never molded any bullets.

    Trade gun shooting low.

My new to me North West trade gun. Shoot very constantly with round balls just really low. Like a foot at 30 yards. The shot patterns are right on. My set up is 90 gn 2f .600 ball with a paper wad or a felt wad with a paper wad over it. This is a bare ball set up. What can I do to bring it...

    Lead ball over 6 shot?

Where I will be squirrel hunting with my new trade gun there are also hogs. So if I saw a sounder would it be OK to load a ball over the shot and move into close range for a shot? I know it is OK with buck but what about 6 shot?

    Historic definition of "Swan Shot"

So I have seen two different definition of swan shot. One is large shot like #2 to 0. The other is shot crudely made that had a shape like a swans head. Basically the drops falling a short distance into water before they could form a ball. So which is right?

    Trade gun frizzen care?

I have bought a northwest trade gun that should be here next week. I was wondering how to care for the frizzen. I figure oil to prevent rust would prevent sparks. I have only shot percussion so this is new.

Black Friday shopping with my Crocket

Headed to the river bottom for some shopping this morning and did quite well. BTW this was my first hunt with real blackpowder. I find that the real stuff is easier to clean up than Pyrodex.
