Advice on cutting Tent & Tipi Poles

Cut your uprights a little bit longer than you think they should be, then pitch your tent. After it's set for a bit to get the wrinkles out, look at it closely. Check the bottom of the tent for length. If it's a wall tent and you are using side poles, check the side walls to be sure that they...

    Tent Fires! Seen any?

Just someone who survived his young and dumb period (and shakes his head in wonder every time that he thinks back over that LONG period of my life). Now. I'm just careful. Having survived my REAL idiocy, I'd hate to go out over something that easily avoided.

    Tent Fires! Seen any?

I was at an event some years back where a regular tarp being used as a fly caught fire. It went up like a piece of paper. The older flame-proofed tent that one end of the tarp was laying across suffered a hole just big enough to stick your finger through. My canvas is flame-proofed.

Anyone been out to Ben Avery this weeks.

This is nothing new. I was very active back in the 1980's in California, where we have local events that would attract many shooters and 50 to 100 traders. Even then, the only interest that the NMLRA seemed to have in the west was in collecting our dues. The only reason that I kept up my...

    wads vs cornmeal

That was a good point about damaged, malformed, or badly cast balls. I'd never considered that dropping a ball could create a flat that might leave an ignition path.

    Thumb cocking Remingtons & Colts

Simple solution: Use both hands and cock the hammer with your off hand thumb.

Wanting to start camping at rendezvous

I saw a regular canvas fly catch fire once. Ever hold a sheet of paper by one corner and then light the lower corner? That's how this canvas burned, and just about as quickly. It was half-consumed before anyone could move. All my canvas is flameproof even though I don't live in a state that...

    Stainless Steel Remington

Bead blast the stainless and it gives a pretty good imitation of nickel.

Wanting to start camping at rendezvous

I agree. A wall tent is about as good as it gets for a family. The first accessory that you want to get is a good fly. You'll find that you sleep, change clothes, etc. in the tent, but that you'll live under the canopy. At many rendezvous sites, you'll be out in the sun, and the shade of a fly...

    loading block vs loose components

Back when I used to compete, there were quite a few bullseye targets that required five shots. I found that a loading block with five patched balls was a good way to keep count.

    Hammock documentation.

Very uncomfortable -- particularly when the suspension line parts because hanging that tight has multiplied the tension on the line past the breaking point. What a let down! :haha:

    Straightrazors

I used this one to shave this morning: Made in New York prior to WWI, possibly before 1900.

    .32 Caliber Rifle

I got a .32 Traditions at an estate sale. Thus far, the only difficulty has been getting the proper accessories. The stores around here barely carry any muzzle loading items. Those that do, cater to the pretend muzzle loaders in .45 and larger calibers. The only complaint that I have about mine...

    Lyman Great Plains Rifle questions

It appears that nobody has mentioned this yet. Ramrods and their attachments come with two different sizes of threads depending upon the manufacturer. In my experience, the 8-32 threads that many sets come with are all right for breach loading rifles, where you are never pulling a ball. However...

    WD40

I've used WD-40 for decades as a water displacement/cleaning solvent. However, I have always followed two rules: Keep it off the stock because it will dissolve any finish and harm the wood.Always follow up with something to act as a rust preventative. In my case, I use Rig. I've also used...

    Inspecting Percussion Caps For Reliability

If you use a Ted Cash capper, inspection is almost automatic. You have to make sure that all the caps are laying face up before you close the lid, and any that are missing the priming compound should be obvious.

    Cappers?

I bought a Ted Cash capper 30+ years ago. It's acquired a nice patina over the years, and still functions perfectly. I appreciate it even more now, because my fingers are nowhere near as limber as they once were. Capping the rifle is effortless when I use it -- not so much if I try to use my...

I bought a new purse. Don't judge me yet.

Back when I used to compete, I preferred a shooting bag that opened like that over the traditional style where the shoulder strap fastened on the back. If you are reloading frequently, it is much easier to do so if you fold the top flap back and don't have the flap in the way every time that you...

    Aiming with Prescription Glasses

When I had my cataract surgery, I had my left eye set up for distance and my right (shooting) eye set up so that my depth of field includes everything from my handgun's rear sight to my Pennsylvania's front sight. I still have glasses for using my computer, and for driving, but for just walking...

What do you take to camp

Dried beef, dried southwestern mixed vegetables, and a beef bouillon cube. Salsa leather optional. Throw it all in a pot with cold water. By the time it comes to a boil the ingredients should be pretty well rehydrated. Simmer until the meat is tender.
