    Scratch Patilla Build

Those of you who have been following my threads know that I have been working on designing a Catalan style patilla lock for a from-scratch custom build. A quick update on that. I have ordered material for the lockplate and will start building very shortly. I plan to make several, including a...

    Serpentine powder and handgonnes.

I recently worked up a CAD model of the Tannenberg handgonne, and I noticed an interesting design feature. In addition to the main bore, there was a much narrower bore which was meant to serve as a powder chamber. This got me to thinking why it was designed that way. Did it have to do with the...

    Ferguson breech threads.

Question about the Ferguson breech threads. Are they more of a square or a V thread form? I can't see very much detail in this picture but it looks very similar to a square or acme thread.

    Patilla design completed.

I have to say, I am quite proud of this design, and it is the first one I have completed. I am very much looking forward to building this lock, or maybe several. Too early to tell at this point.

    Designing springs for locks.

People with more CAD experience than I, what is your process for designing lock springs? I am working on designing a miquelet lock and the springs are proving to be the most difficult part.

    Miquelet double barrels.

Now that I have begun designing a patilla after a lock off of a Catalonian musket, it got me wondering. Were the Spanish and Portuguese ever known for building side by side fowlers? I have thus far only found information about the English side by side guns, but that being said, Spaniards and...

    Snaphance CAD models

Now that I have the original Moroccan snaphance lock disassembled, I have begun measuring the parts and modeling them in Fusion 360. I've made a few models and assemblies so far, and once I have acquired materials, I hope to begin the actual manufacturing of the parts. Here is the cock and...

    Snaphance build update.

Now that I have the original lock in a disassembled state, I have began measuring the constituent parts and have now generated some CAD models for reference. Here are some of the models I have generated, along with an assembly model of the lock plate and pan. I believe I am at a point now that I...

    Ferguson rifle breech screw.

While understanding that a Ferguson rifle is, in fact, a breech loader, I hope this is still an appropriate forum to ask questions about it as it is still a flintlock. The breech screw is an 11 TPI, 11 lead tapered thread which mates with the corresponding tapped hole in the breech. I've been...

    Replicating screws from original locks.

Hello everyone. Pictured is a screw from what I presume is a Moroccan snaphance lock I am studying. Having single pointed many threads in my career as a machinist, I notice just how different the thread form is from that of modern screws. It’s quite shallow for one, though I can’t tell if that...

    Snaphance sear operation.

A friend has graciously allowed me to borrow this antique snaphance lock to disassemble, measure, and copy. I understand that this horizontal sear mechanism is nearly identical to that of the wheellock and the later miquelet, of which I am also planning a future build. I understand the basics of...

    Tanegashima stock construction.

I have an interest in building a Japanese style matchlock at some point in the future. I am wondering about the brass ring around the stock and the breech. Were Japanese guns constructed with a two piece stock?

    Miquelet locks.

Hi all. I recently acquired a kit from The Rifle Shoppe, specifically their Spanish light military escopeta. As a miquelet is essentially a form of flintlock, I thought it appropriate to ask here if anyone else has built this kit or one similar. And if so, could you show me photos of the...

    George Lauber Wheellock

Are the George Lauber wheellock plans any good? I would like to build one and they are the only plans I can find. I have found a copy of the book, but before I spend more than $50 on a book that's out of print, I would like to know what other people think about it.

    Screws, taps, and dies.

Those who have read my previous post about reaming benches know that I plan to start making muzzleloaders from scratch, hand forged and everything. Screw making is still a bit of a mystery to me. I understand that the thread plates used to make screws didn't cut, instead they swaged the thread...

    Barrel boring bench

Feel free to move/delete if this is the wrong forum for this post. I am interested in making tools for building traditional fowling gun barrels. Information seems to be lacking on the boring bench though. Has anyone built one and would be willing to provide photos or details?

    Pedersoli Enfield Bayonet

Does anyone know of a decent reproduction bayonet that will fit the Pedersoli three band Enfield rifle? I recently bought one and when I tried to mount it, it fit very poorly and it wore off some of the bluing. This is a brand new musket that I have not even fired yet. Needless to say the...

    .550 Pritchett Ball cartridge.

I have 100 0.550 diameter Pritchett bullets that I intend to make Enfield type paper cartridges with. The original bullet was .568 in diameter, and that was for the 1855 type cartridge if I am not mistaken. What size mandrels would I need to make the later Enfield cartridges with the .550 bullet?

    Pritchett ball size

I'm looking to purchase Pedersoli 3 band Enfield rifle soon and I want to make authentic cartridges for it. The British used a smooth sided minie bullet called the Pritchett ball which was undersized as to allow it to slide easily down the bore when wrapped in the remainder of the cartridge...

    Scent Bottle Lock

Anyone know where I can find information on the Forsythe bottle lock? I'm interested in a shotgun build and I'd like to reproduce this variety of percussion lock.
