How hard is shot lead ?

Hello everyone, Have approx: 20 LBS of #6 chilled lead shot. Was wondering since I no longer have a shotgun, thinking about melting it down into ingots. Later using it to mold up some round balls. Is it a hard lead or a soft lead? Thanks, Vearl

    Sight adjustment T.C. New Englander

Have a 50 cal T.C. New Englander. The rear sight is adjustable, by screwing the adjustment screw up or down. Need to know how far up or down each elevation click produces in POI at 25 yds, 50 yds and 100 yds. Can't find any other helpful resourse to answer the question. Thanks.

    Sprue removal

I just finished molding up a batch of 58 ca. round balls from pure lead. I used the J. Tanner .570 round ball mold. I cut the lead sprue off with my metal nippers. However there is still a small part still sticking up on each one. Thinking that this piece would cause accuracy problems. How does...

    Where in your state ?

Here in Oklahoma, the best deer hunting areas ( public & private) is located in the N.E.corner, SE corner and Central Eastern counties. Western counties have deer but not in the numbers as the Eastern part of the state. Seems that the public hunting areas are being neglected by the Game Dept and...

    Recovered range lead

Just had given to me approx. 10 lbs of recovered range lead. It is harder than pure lead. Was wondering if it would be ok to cast round balls and shoot in my smoothbore rifle? Know that it will produce slightly larger round balls than I would get with pure lead. Any advise will be welcomed.

    Taking a friend

I invited another retired friend to black powder deer hunt with me this year. He has never black powder hunted before. He doesn't own a muzzle loader, so he will borrow my T.C. 54 CAL Renegade to hunt with. Showed him how to load and shoot it safely. He is not a bad shot out to 75 yds. All we...

    Bad inletting?

Saw this today and wondered what was wrong with it. Upon looking closer I saw what appears to me to be a bad job of inletting on a Pedersoli 12ga. SXS shotgun. Is this the norm for the Pedersoli company? Looks like it is at an angle to the barrel and not far enough back into the stock's forearm

    Pistol stand & range rod

Been locked up in the house due to cold weather. Had some scrap wood, so I sat down and built a pistol loading stand. (Was always fumbling around with pistol in hand trying to load it one handed). Got a 12 inch x 3/8 in Dia. Hickory rod, muzzle protector, and a 54 cal jag. Already had a 2 inch...

    Peeps, Scopes Pro or Not.

I have seen so many traditional Muzzle loaders for sale that have been drilled for scopes. Some that have peep sights on them. Now I for one hold a positive opinion that if your eye sight is diminishing and you use a peep sight to bring your ability to aim and shoot back to normal, ...well so be...

Wondering if there is any documentation on how good or how poor our forefathers were at shooting. This would include trade era and Civil War'

    Flintlock problem

Have seen a problem with my small Siler lock. When I fire the rifle, the cock comes forward as usual, and strikes the frizzen. However the frizzen doesn't open up all the way. The bottom edge of the frizzen and the flint are touching one another. The flint is a 5/8 by 5/8 English flint. Showers...

    Gotta luv those christmas presents

My cousin (Southeastern Okla.) stopped by yesterday. He braved the cold and bad roads to bring me a Christmas present. He said that an old deserted gas station (from the 50's and 60's) was being torn down. He was able to get me about 80 lbs. of used wheel weights. Said all he had to do was pick...

    My trusty 36 Cal flinter

Brought out the trusty ol' 36 cal. flintlock "Poor Boy" rifle today. The only rifle that I lay claim to having built. It has a 36 cal. 13/16 Douglas barrel, Siler small lock, L&R Triggers. Iron furniture with a full length Cherry stock. Overall length is 53 inches. Built this way back in the...

    Another one snuck in.

He came into my stand area about 20 minute past the legal shooting time. Pic shows AM for pic time, when it should have shown PM time. ( will make that change today) The previous night I had a doe and two yearlings at my feeder. So I had to buy a trail camera to get some pics. Hope they start...
