    Proper cloth for camp towels

I don't know what would actually be PC/HC, but I've always just used whatever was handy and close to hand. Sometimes it's a shirt sleeve, sometimes it's a hunk of canvas or a cast off piece of buck/elk skin. (One time, I grabbed my buddy's spare breech clout by mistake - he wasn't very happy...

The worse camp meal you ever ate?

Rocky Mountain Nat'l Primitive Rondyvoo a few years back. My best friend and I were experimenting with mixing several different types of adult beverages with the end result being that, A. After the first 3 or 4 drinks, everything we mixed up started tasting pretty good and, B. We also got the...

    gourd canteen wanted

They're actually not all that difficult to make and seeds are readily available from several different sources. Of the two I have, I bought one at a rondyvoos and the other one was made for me by my best friend. If it's instant gratification you seek then chek out Jas. Townsend & Sons. (Don't...

    Sheath

I've made a couple of custom knife sheaths for a friend of mine, but it entails giving up the knife (and the original sheath) for the duration of the process. And that's not something that most folks are willing to do. And I'm not volunteering (don't have the time right now), just mentioning...

    Hello from Kansas!

Welcome from a former Ellis county resident! (I lived in/around Hays/Walker for 25 years before moving to East Tennessee about 5 years ago.) Lots of friends thereabouts and good buck skinners amongst 'em. Welcome to the camp!

    Hello from Tennessee!

Welcome from East Tennessee! Pull up a stump and lend an ear, there's plenty of knowledgeable folk hereabouts.

    odd cast iron

No promises, but I'll try to get a pic or two of my waffle iron this weekend and post it/them. No idea how old it actually is and I've seen others that were similar, but with considerably shorter handles. It's not something I'd take on a trek or a scout, but it's definitely one my very favorite...

    odd cast iron

I have a rectangular waffle iron with long handles - properly pre-warmed and pre-lubed with non-stick cooking spray, it continues to turn out the best waffles I've ever eaten. (And for a neat and different treat, I substitute corn bread batter for the waffle mix. MMMMmmm!) :hatsoff:

    Bow & drill fire starter

During that time period, a Native American was a white male born on this continent. Indians (which comes from the word "Indios" meaning "Children of God" and not, as most wrongly assume because Christo Columbi thought he had found India) were the "indigenous peoples" of plains and mountains...

    stopping bug holes in horns.

Very fine sawdust and wood glue. Get it thick enough to make a putty, then use your thumb to press it in good and tight, leaving some excess to be sanded down. Finish with .0000 steel wool.

    my new throwing knife......

Better yet, invest in some heavy duty copper rivets and replace the screws and you won't have to worry about it at all.

    Hello from E TN

Welcome from E. Tn. This might very well be the best present you could have gotten yourself. Folks here are very knowledgeable and most of 'em are pretty friendly.

    Cooking deer heart.

Heck, I just cut it into chunks and use it in place of stew meat in my chili. Really tough to beat deer heart chili!

    RIP Musketman!

I've been away for a couple of years, following other paths while dealing with broken computers, lost favorites, and trying to come to terms with the direction(s) life sometimes takes. Long story short, I finally stopped in again last night and was browsing old posts and memories and friends...

What do you set your oven on??

Not being able to afford/too lazy to buy/make the fancy stuff that everyone else has mentioned, I just clear a little bare earth, put my coals on that and then set my dutch on the coals with more on the lid. When everything is done cooking I toe dirt over the space that I've just used and pour a...

    Where to put powder measure

My shooting bag strap is two layers thick, so I simply cut a small slit to accomodate my powder measure and added 2 stitches immediately below it to prevent its' going too deep. I secure it with a piece of whang to the strap to provide security and allow me to simply drop the measure if I'm...

    I'm dissapointed.

Par-boil yer 'coon in soda water before cooking it and it'll eat just as good and sweet as any piece of meat you ever stuck in yer mouth with the possible exception of Mountain lion. (Learned that trick from my dear sweet mother when I was just a youngun.) :hatsoff: I've eaten things on...

    Making sippin pie questions

I make mine (from the recipe I submitted here) about 2 gallons at a time and mix all the ingredients in a two gallon crock jug. I store it with the cork firmly but not tightly in place in a closet or a shed. I'll then transfer the contents as needed to a smaller "sippin' jug." There's no need...

    How to throw the hawk

Yeah, me too, B-man. At the same time, I'm looking forward to banging some squirrels with the old (1832) side by twice shotgun on Monday when me and Une Carabine head out on a short overnight trek. I'll take a 'hawk along and a spare for U.C. and we'll probably toss 'em once or twice, but I'm...
