    Stain over Aquafortis

If you use some laurel mountain Forge Cherry stain or Danglers red and dilute it with denatured alcohol ---on a test piece first... it should work well to add whatever intensity of redness you want. I also like to use a 1# cut of dewaxed garnet shellac as a sealer that adds a red tint to the...

    Rust Bluing trough

Anybody ever make one of these as described by Laurel Mountain Forge?? "Purchase a length of 2 ½ inch PVC pipe and two end caps. The PVC should be a few inches longer than the barrel you will be bluing. Cut the PVC pipe lengthwise, about 1/3 of the way down, leaving an opening of about 2...

    Elk antler pipe

Jeesh!! I have spent thirty years trying to get the patina on my meerschaums. One was beautiful...gave it away. The one I use now isn't smoked enough. :idunno: The real challenge is to smoke a clay pipe enough to develop a patina!! without breaking it! :hmm: While the antler is bone...

    Hooked Breeches

English made fowlers from the middle of the 18th century (and rifles too in some cases) had hooked breeches..Griffin...etc. Octogon to round smoothbore and rifle barrels.... In some cases the only difference between a rifle and afowler was the barrel. I have seen a Griffin with one of each type...

    Aluminum Ramod

I have been using the same hickory ramrod in my .54 for four years at the range and in the field. I made it myself and it is tapered from 7/16 at the muzzle to 5/16" at the threaded tip. I have puled a number of balls with it and it is fine! As Russ T pointed out the key is a straight grain...

    Apprentice Built Cherry Fowler

I tried several different mixtures of the lye and water. I think I ended up with about 1 TBLS to 10 TBLS of water. There is quite a range that will work fine. The length of time you leave it on will somewhat determine the darkness. Be sure to neutralize it completey. Exposing it to sunlight will...

    What to expect

Scouter, Look on Track of the Wolf to get some idea of prices. I think you will have to shop forever to find a decent turkey gun for $500. Think more like a minimum of $1100 for a reliable gun, maybe a little less for a used Northwest trade gun. If it is much less than that you better have a...

    Can you brown brass?

I put a rag soaked with ammonia in a sealable can along with the brass parts overnight (No parts touching the rag). Take em out and clean them up to what you want it to look like. Don't leave it a lot longer as it will really eat up the brass.
