    inletting pistol butt caps

What is the procedure for inletting butt caps with extensions running up the sides of the butt as in continental guns? Fit to the butt first and then do the extensions or try and do it all at once. I know there was an article on this topic some where but I have lost it.

    Patch or Wad

What is the general consensus for a 20 ga with a ball? A patched ball and or a bare ball and wad? Bore is .602. I could use .585 balls and a patch, or maybe a .600 ball and a card wad over the powder. What say you?

    Breeching an older barrel

I am fitting the breech plug on a barrel which has been in the closet for some time. The question is which flat should go up? The barrel is marked "GRRW 32A" with a marker on one flat near the muzzle. On another flat near the breech it is stamped "GR (with the R upside down) 8114". The breech...

    Flintlock Vincent

I am gathering the parts to build a Vincent style half stock. I know its not HC but Whisker illustrates a flint half stock which is not unlike the Vincent rifles. My rifle will be light and thin, I'm using a 13/16 barrel. My question is what lock should I use? It needs to be small enough to...

    inletting mainspring problem

I am inletting my lock and am to the point of doing the mainspring, But given the width of the spring if I cut deeply enough to accomodate it the mortice will cut into the barrel channel. I could thin the spring but wouldn't that weaken it? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Working from a blank

Some time ago I decided to build an Ohio half stock rifle. I bought a nice curly blank and put in the barrel, drilled the ramrod hole and roughly profiled the stock. I had a bandsaw then and cut the blank to its approximate thickness from the wrist on. The butt is still the original...

    making a capote

I'm trying to make a capote from a Hudson's Bay blanket which has the four short stripes indicating that it is a four point size. The style is double breasted and the pattern shows the short stripes on the left side which laps over the right when it is closed. Anyway I lay out the pieces as...

    Ball/patch for .602

What is the preferred ball/patch combination for a .602 smoothbore? I've been using a .600 ball and a .010 patch and an OP wad behind the ball. The wad solved a burned patch problem but groups are still two and a flier.

    swamped barrels on Tennessee rifles

I'm thinking of building an East Tennessee style flintlock and am unclear about barrel shapes. Were they always straight or were there occasional swamped ones? I seem to recall Ron Borron mentioning a swamped barrel but I can't find the quote. What are your thoughts?

I'm working on an older Kennedy pistol kit. I remember seeing something about the tricks for inletting the trigger guard but can't recall the details, Something about doing the butt end first and working forward perhaps. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
