    Winter patch lube

Well, the temps are in the 20s and the wind is blowing 15-20 mph. Wind chill must be in the low teens. Being a masochistic type, I'm at the range when I realize that as soon as I use my "custom" patch lube, at least one of the components is going to freeze when it comes in contact with the...

    caywood wilson ordered

Brother, I have a Caywood Wilson in 20 gauge and not only is it a good looking piece, it's a shooter, a sparker and a quality arm. Mine's stained very dark and I put a leather sling on it. It shoots RB very well and shot patterns up nicely, too. You will not be sorry you ordered one...

    Jaeger Arrives today

I, too, feel your pain. I took off the other day when my Virginia rifle was being delivered. Any other time, UPS would have been there at 9:00 am but they didn't come until 4:00pm this time. It is indeed agonizing. Hope someone's home to sign for the delivery. TOW won't deliver one without a...

    Carrying Flinter While Hunting

Barrel down and always aware of where it is pointed, using both hands. If it's raining, cow's knee over lock or under some sort of cover or my armpit. Basically use the same precautions you would use with any other firearm. I have a sling but only use it when gun has been discharged and is unloaded.

    Longgun security / safes

Paul is right. Use of deadly force can never be used in defense of property, only in defense of life. You can only use that force which is enough to overcome the force being used against you. A couple years ago a commercial garage owner suffered a series of B&E's. (BTW, Burglary can only be...

    Indian Imports

Well, this is the argument for either buying a known brand or saving up and buying a custom gun. Saw a lantern once that was on consignment in an antique shop and was being offerred as an "old time" lamp. Had a sticker on the bottom, said "Made in Pakistan." Just got my new "Virginia" rifle...

    Rifling

You'uns are funny guys. I was only asking because I bought that new Virginia rifle and it's got a Colerain barrel with cut rifling, is all. I was just wondering. I have learned more on this forum than I ever thought. What a wealth of info you guys are.

    Rifling

The more I learn, the dumber I get. Will someone please explain to me what is meant by "cut rifling?" Are there other types of rifling used on muzzleloading barrels? Is one better than the other, ballistically?

    Oiling a Barrel

I use rendered bear fat and also have a bottle of rendered goose fat.

    Newbie

The feather isn't an old wives tale at all. It was used, and still is somewhat, in the old days to plug the vent to keep water and moisture out of the barrel. When the quill was extracted it drew a few grains out into the pan and is supposed to have made ignition quicker, because there was a...

    Does it make a difference?

I'll post pics as soon as I get the rifle, and take the pics and learn how to post them. No doubt it'll be a travesty of an attempt, but I'll give 'er a go.

    Best arguement yet

Yeah, and I wouldn't be real crazy about the position of the flint in the jaws as shown in the first picture, either.

    Does it make a difference?

Well, after all the talk and all the advice and all the discussions, I bought a .50 cal fullstock Virginia rifle - in flint, of course. What an agonizing decision. The board was pretty well split between the two calibers I was considering, and Paul was even swaying my thinking into a .36 for a...

How to shorten a barrel, etc

I did what Paul said. I cut through the wood at the point where the new forestock's gonna end. This was after I removed the pin and a thimble guide that was in front of that point. Once I did that I worried that wood and tapped it with a rubber mallet. I saw the wood start to move and then I was...

How to shorten a barrel, etc

Oooohhhh, I gotcha. Naw, I never used the stuff. I'll try and take it out as you said. Thanks for clarifying that.

How to shorten a barrel, etc

Thanks. I'll try the release agent but I won't push it to the point where I'm beating it up. If it doesn't come loose with a modicum of effort, I'll just do what you suggested, which ought to be a hoot. It's a shame what he did. This is a transitional piece, looks good but it never was a fine...

How to shorten a barrel, etc

Yes, when I was talking with him he said it was glass-bedded. I'll try some release agent first, as I guess that's easier to find than a bunch of liquid nitrogen, as I have no idea where to find that apparatus. The stock's going to be shortened, too, to accomodate the shortened barrel, but...

How to shorten a barrel, etc

I just purchased a rifle with a damaged barrel; the owner cut in a dovetail for a sight that went all the way into the barrel about 6 inches from the muzzle!! This barrel is attached to the fullstock rifle and has been glass bedded into the stock. This piece is otherwise fine - apparently the...
