    New here. A few questions.

I may be corrected here, but I think the red pillow ticking measures .015" and the blue mattress ticking is .018". usually. It can vary. (I think those colors and thicknesses are correct) The best thing to do is get some of both and try them, then go with what works best.

    Shotgun bore mop for cleaning?

I have seen a .40/.45 caliber mop. I don't know how tightly it would fit in the bore. Since it is only a couple of dollars I can try a few different sizes, but I was hoping to get an idea if it needed to be oversized and by how much. I figure they might be looser than a caliber specific jag.

    Shotgun bore mop for cleaning?

What caliber or gauge would I use for a .40 caliber rifle?

    Wipe with dry patch?

I only use brass jags for any firearm. I didn't even know they made steel jags.

    Shotgun bore mop for cleaning?

Will a wet shotgun bore mop clean the bore of a flintlock? I guess I am wondering if it would be tight enough in the bore to remove the fouling. Would it just push the fouling to the breech? They just seem to be an easy tool to use, there must be a catch.

    Wipe with dry patch?

Thanks for those tips. I really appreciate it. As for the text I bolded- you have no idea just how special I am.

    Wipe with dry patch?

Ahh, I think I get it. I can safely run a dry patch through a wet bore, but shouldn't run a dry patch through a dry bore?

    Wipe with dry patch?

I have read many threads from people who get a jag and patch stuck because they use a dry patch. I also read that a dry patch is supposed to be used after cleaning and when wiping between shots. Now I'm confused. What makes a dry patch get stuck? BTW, some of the older members may remember...

    More patch and lube questions

Thanks Necchi. That is very useful info. I appreciate it.

    More patch and lube questions

You can order Ballistol from Midway or Brownell's and probably other vendors. I found a local supplier.

    More patch and lube questions

I have Ballistol and will be mixing some, probably 6 to 1 to start. Once I soak my patch material and squeeze the excess out, how long do I need to let it dry? Do I need to keep the lubed patch material in an airtight container like a ziploc bag if I won't be shooting immediately? Can I lube...

    What is Dutch's system?

I mean, is it a book, pamphlet or just some pages copied and stapled, a CD? It seems like it is too good of a resource to not have, especially at only $20.00, so I am going to order it pretty soon. I was just wondering what form is comes in.

Does temperature affect black powder loads?

It was 56* today and should be over 60* tomorrow. Anything under 40* I start thinking about hibernating. Of course 95* is just a warm sunny day- made for playing outside.

Does temperature affect black powder loads?

Thanks for the replies. I don't know why I thought about this today, but I don't remember reading anything about it. I guess since the pressures are lower there isn't as much effect as on high pressure smokeless powders.

Does temperature affect black powder loads?

In centerfire cartridges temps can and do change a load's pressure. A load that is accurate when used in summer can have lower pressure in winter, and even leaving cartridges in the sun in summer can raise pressures to dangerous levels. Are blackpowder loads in muzzleloaders subject to...

    Pinning a ramrod

I am not an expert by any means, but I have read a lot here written by guys who are. Basically what you need to do is mount the end on the rod and drill a small hole through both, then tap a pin through the hole. As for making your own rod be careful that there are no grain ends along the...

    Shooting bag question

I am descended from the Smiths, Dowdys, Spradlins and McSpaddens. That is good through my grandparents. I have no idea who we were before on the maternal side. One of these days I plan on tracing my family tree just to see who we were and where we came from. I see other people tracing their...

    Shooting bag question

Thanks guys. I figured the bag would be pretty utilitarian but there are some style differences that I have no idea about. The long pointed flap, a wide flap, the Cross of Lorraine on some of the flaps, etc. The material would be whatever is available locally- probably usually deer since I...

    Shooting bag question

Rifle styles varied by maker, region and time period. Did the shooting/hunting bags vary as well? I mean, were there certain styles according to the region and time period? I understand the possibles bag was generally begun to be called that around 1830. I am interested in what my family may...
