    Un-confuse me about Uberti

Tks! Although it can be 'made to function', it's a new firearm and shouldn't have to be. I'll contact them!😎

    Un-confuse me about Uberti

I regret to add that I just got an 1851Navy, by Uberti that simply would not function out of the box. Apparently, the slot for the cylinder pawl to run through is too tight (& roughly milled), or less likely, the pawl is too 'fat' to function. There is extreme resistance in cocking, indexing the...

    12 pounder Bronze cannon

I would question polishing, given historical considerations, as well. However, if you're set on polishing them, I would use Flitz with a couple od Mother's polishing wheels/cones before using anything abrasive (to include polishing compounds). Then, I would be cautious in using minimal abrasives...

    Building a Cannon

Unknown material. I would assume that it was cast and then turned. The hole runs full length. It carried lubricant/oil from one end to the other. It has marks that would indicate turning. It was a a piston rod out of a power generator for Tok, Alaska. I would like to get ahold of the gal...

    Building a Cannon

Hello the camp! This is a new venture for me so any input is welcome ... This is part of an old piston rod. The oil journal is about 1.5". It's a straight exterior profile roughly 4-1/8" flaring to about 7-1/4" where the end around the crank was cut off. I got it from a muzzleloader gal that...

    Lyle Guns

Having looked at the prices of a Lyle gun (& there were two outside the door of Station Duluth, when I was there 'in the day'). Building one may not be so cost prohibitive 😯

    Lyle Guns

The steel blank that I have would not lend to a lyle gun. It would, however work for a small artillery piece or naval gun. A naval carriage would somehow seem appropriate! I'm trying to find pics of it and will include when I do. I would greatly appreciate any input. The person who gave it to me...

    Lyle Guns

Having spent a career in the USCG, it occurs to me that it would be a kick to get ahold of an old Lyle Gun. They were used for firing a line to/over a vessel in distress for a breeches buoy shoreside rescue. Anyone think of any sources?🤔

Am I the only one in the Great Lakes Region?

Although a bit removed from the Great Lakes, per se; I am relocating to Sparta, WI, from AK and looking to get into the local MZ community. BTW: I grew up on the North Shore of Lake Superior (a previous chapter/life).

    Lead?!

Thanks a mil for all the helpful replies! I had no intention of leaving Alaska so was hoarding the stuff as well. Additionally, I had a literal lifetime's supply of the old wheel wts for modern rifle/pistol bullets. Who would have known! ArtKodiak

My new 62 caliber flintlock rifle

Looks like Jud's work all right... Nice rifle! Carry it with pride. Coincidentally, if you ever meet a fella goes by the name of Lightfoot (previously from Delta Jct, AK as well), ask about his big bore rifle... we used to call it 'Planet Thrower'! I won't spoil the fun... you will have to find...

    Lead?!

With the Chinese taking over the corporate world, does anyone know of a domestic source of lead? (I had to leave a literal lifetime's supply behind when moving from Alaska...)

    Big Bore Bedford?

That's a lot of work in those pics. Nice rifle. My sincere compliments. This comes from someone who has yet to have the wherewithall to get off the thinking landing and try a Bedford! I'll have to give it a go! v/r ArtKodiak

What to do with brand new gun?

Yep!  Ya hit it dead on! The cut patches (complete circles at times) may well have been a sharp crown, in part, but after taking at it with one of Joe Wood's wonderful little coning tools (what a joy to thumb in a ball without a short starter!), it still cut patches for a while until I gave it...

    Xray Room Lead?

SCORE!!! Just make sure you test it (not with a thumbnail!). I used dental x-ray 'lead' and found it too hard for mz conicals (but a bit softer than wheel weights). Conicals stuck down the bore (payed hob gettin them down!). As you say, at the least it's a bundle of $ in scrap  . ArtKodiak

What to do with brand new gun?

My apology, and point taken.  Allow me to re-phrase, 'smoothing out or breaking in the barrel' vice literal 'seasoning' (like a frying pan).  My experience, although by no means as vast or weighty as the other, more worthy, opinions expressed, is that my barrels have all shot a bit wild for a...

What to do with brand new gun?

Welcome to our disreputable lot! The advice given is sound. Pay special heed to the safety advice given.  -  If using it for hunting, you may consider one of those 'unbreakable' rods at first. It may not meet with tradition, but imagine needing a follow up (groan!) and breaking a rod...

    Buck slayer bullets

Should add: I first got into MZ'ing with a Mt Stalker. I started hanging out on the COHT forums, and here we are.  As for the Mt Stalker; I still have it for nostalgia... Oh, and to remind me what a miserable thing a poorly fitting rifle can be to shoot!  We all start somewhere.  Good luck...
