    Dental lead hardness

Just curious, when you guys measure the hardness of lead, do you take into account that the hardness is dependent on more than just the alloy? For example do you melt/cool using a repeatable regimen before measuring?

    i need some ideas

I think there is a fair bit of infomation online if you look around... a quick search came up with: http://hometown.aol.com/dschwdturn/qew/DuckCalls/qqduckcallmaking.html Some other possibilities would be small priming flask, wooden containers for anything from patches to patches to balls.

    i need some ideas

I don't know if it would be PC, but how about a duck call. Sounds like some of the pieces you have would be about the right size.

    Flattening the horn

Ok, thanks for the response. It sounds like many consider oil to be an important part of the process - for more than just the heat. Good to know!

    Flattening the horn

I understand what you are saying, but pressure cookers have come a long way... the one I use for cooking can be safely depressurized in just a few seconds. BTW: I'm not arguing whether it's really a good way to soften a horn, as I have no idea.

    Flattening the horn

Just out of curiosity, why? Concern over the safety of pressure cookers in general, or something specific to using it for this purpose?

    Is this Flint

I agree with runner, looks like petrified wood to me. BTW: You might not want to advertise where you got it. :nono:

Attacking??? This has seemed like a pretty friendly thread to me... I thought that was the point of his post in the first place - to start a discussion!

    Making a forge

Sorry for going a bit off-topic, but what do you guys use for an anvil? The ones I've seen are pretty expensive.

    lead toxicity and regulations

No disagreement as to getting involved - I just don't agree (respectfully) with the manner. I think that isolating ourselves from the rest of the hunting community is an invitation to be ignored. BTW: If I was concerned about being considered a crackpot, I wouldn't be into ML. Once...

    lead toxicity and regulations

By taking the stance that "this is [not] nearly as much of an issue with slow-moving and highly-cohesive pure lead round balls.". We would be tacitly agreeing that is IS an issue for hunting in general. That is not something that I, for one, am prepared to do. I just don't accept the science...

    hazmat shipping

I have a question regarding the shipping of powder... I'm sure someone here can clarify for me. Does that mean that I, as the purchaser, need to be home to receive delivery, or can anyone of age receive delivery. Thanks, Paul

I don't think so... bears are of the family Ursidae and pigs of the family Suidae. They aren't even of the same order - bears:Carnivora, pigs:Artiodactyla.

    Help

Here's my usual process on walnut. 1) de-whisker the wood (water, heat, steel wool). 2) An oil finish like tung oil, BLO, watco. Soak the surface, let sit for a bit then wipe off. Let that dry. 3) Fill the pores - I use a commercial filler. 4) Spar varnish (high gloss). As many coats as...
