Can you blue a chrome-plated gun barrel?

Find a chrome shop in your area to strip the parts down to bare metal. It shouldn't cost much and, if done correctly, won't do any harm to the steel. Don't bother trying DIY chrome stripping. It makes a toxic mess.

    First kit build

Those kits can be a hoot, and make darned good shooters. Fit everything together before filing, sanding, or finishing. Alcohol based stains- or dyes- are the way to go for that beechwood, not oil-based. Aquafortis will give a nice dark chocolate brown. The stock will benefit from a good bit...

    Shooting with the Ladies again.....

Laughing and shooting, shooting and laughing. Does not get any better than that. Great video, Mark. Thanks!

    Refinishing beech redux

I used aquafortis on a Traditions kit beech "Kentucky" stock. Turned the wood dark brown when oiled, came out really nice. Alcohol-based stains work great on beech, too.

Shooting flintlocks in the rain?? Pioneer Flats Shootout Fun

That was pure fun on a rainy day. And even when we weren't shooting, there was a place to stay dry, good food, and fine company.

    The 11Th Commandment

30 years ago, my uncle (RIP George, and forever thanks) introduced me to muzzleloading rifles with his brand new inline. I was instantly hooked, but knew I didn't want that style of rifle. Started with a Pedersoli .50 "Kentucky" caplock a week or so later and never looked back. So yes, they...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went to PA (Shootout at Pioneer Flats with the Black Powder Maniac) and dryballed. Also did a little shooting. Rain kept a lot of people away yesterday, but those who were there were a heck of a fun group to shoot with.

    Kibler Colonial patchbox

Well, if the man himself is telling me the screw heads should be left on, I guess I've got some more work to do with this lid. I have enjoyed every moment of thie process of putting this kit together, from communicating with Bree, to picking up my kit and meeting Jim, who was gracious as could...

    Kibler Colonial patchbox

Based on some of what I've seen here and the magical "search" function, I went ahead and filed them off. I had countersunk a bit deeper than I ought to have, so there are rings around the heads, not bad, but a bit more filing will take care of most or all of that. Thanks to all who replied...

    Kibler Colonial patchbox

Fitted the brass plate to the end of the lid, but don't like the screw heads and would rather just file them off flush, like rivets. Any reason why I shouldn't do this?

    Unmentionables

Well, rather than anyone arguing about it, go to "Forum Announcements & Forum Help" and scroll down to "Forum Rules". That ought to clear up any misunderstandings regarding permitted topics. One rule to take to heart is the reminder that we're all guests here.

Duelist1954 Lecture on 18th Century Smoothbore Shooting

While I'd have FAR preferred a video of the event itself, the attendees, activities etc., it might be a stretch to call the vid "boring". Just criticizing the guy's weight is ridiculously out of line, though.

    Aqua Fortis

Works great on beech. Turns a warm dark brown.

Tell me why you like your Traditions Kentucky?

Definitely agree about ditching the factory nosecap, and also fitting another tenon. With mine, built up the nose of the stock with wood and put on a longer (sheet brass) nosecap, rather than shorten the barrel. Six of one, half dozen of the other.
