Saw this nice Baker rifle at local antique shop. Back action lock marked Baker. Ornate with a unique peep sight on the tang. Looks to be around .40 cal. Shop wants over $500. but I know I could get it for less. Did not have a bore light with me, but next trip I will have one.
Anyone familiar with this nice looking old rifle?

Swinney lists C. Baker as "Probably a dealer in wholesale hardware and gun materials" and cites a couple guns by known makers with your lock's stamping. The gun looks like a nice condition New York area hunting piece with typical commercial hardware and a "lollipop" tang sight. ... the barrel appears to have a slot for a missing rear sight (sometimes removed when a tang sight was added)

I will go back with a flashlight or bore light , and take a better look. Any Idea if it’s worth 500. The lock seems solid, nipple is loose, very little corrosion I can see, but the barrel needs to be investigated.

Is an original, and probably a shooter. For me it’s definitely worth $500.

Don't be surprised if it's been sold when you go back. My late FIL always said "if you snooze, you loose". I always carry a drop down the bore light when ever I go "shopping".
For his sake I hope not, that’s a nice rifle

Have not been back to the antique shop yet, going next week . It’s a two hour drive, and with the price of gas, I pick my trips carefully. If anyone else wants the contact info, PM me and I will supply.

Went back to the Antique Mall today to look at the C.Baker rifle again. Brought a bore light this time. Good bore, but rifling seems to have very little twist to it. But from what I can see it’s clean, nipple looks good also.
I took a picture with a ruler over the muzzle, appears to be a .40 cal maybe .36 or .38 cal possibly.
Nice heavy barrel target gun.
