A lot of shooting myths existed back then. Some exist today, like super increased powder charges giving increased range or long barrels adding range. Some blunderbuss were made with flattened bells to throw the shot sideways instead of circular. I wonder if this was a myth for fowling piece shatters that a single ball would harm your gun :idunno:
Kid gloves would be made from young goatskin. And that can be pretty thin. I wonder if chamois could be used.

I have tried leather patching in a smooth rifle.

Mixed results. Tried chamois ( which may or may not be leather, but I think this actually was ) as well as thin garment leather bought at the local Tandy store.
Seemed to be about as accurate as cotton patching, but the chamois got slimey and stretchy from the lube a few days after I lubed them. The garment leather was better in this respect.
I only experimented with the leather a couple of shooting sessions, and decided the project was worthy of further experimentation at some future date.

Leather wads soaked in lubricant works okay with shot, in my guns.

My available time to go shooting has almost been non-existent over the last couple of years, and almost all of the times I would have been able to go for at least a little while, it has either been raining, or wind gusts up to 30 MPH, or both.
