Make a cost show what the equivalent would be today's money, never mind showing how apt you are on the amount. That reeks of elitism and teaches nothing for those looking for knowledge.

"Modern cost equivalent" is almost impossible accurately assess for a variety of factors, among them the differences between a cash-poor agrarian society and a modern fiat-money economy and the differences in cost of living between various regions today. You just aren't going to get precise figure.

I was about to point out that "d" indicated pence, not dollars, a bit ago but figured that Patocazador was just making a joke (Four dollars in the early 19th century would be a pretty considerable sum for such work. The whole gun probably cost around $14.)

I guess I should have wrote _ _ 4d
Judging cost is almost impossible, as someconmon things were very expensive and some very cheap. Salt sold in St. Louis for the same price gun powder went for.
$2500 can get you a good Hawkin today, $ 25 back in the day, but a Leman cost about $14 but you might pay the same price as a good Hawken, of corse you can find good guns for $1400.
Rent could be cheap but food and clothing higher, many worked and got room and board as part of the pay. Land was pretty cheap in America, China for your table pretty high.
That quote was from the Restoration, And _ _ 4d was close to a common day labors or unskilled workers daily pay. Call it $40-50 today.
