I was able to find a little time tonight to get the sights set into the barrel. After filing the front sight to pretty close I drove it out made the mistake of being impatient and over ground the sides on a sanderšŸ™....I think it was Dave that warned me about that sort of thing..

Brilliant! Thany you for sharing your experience. I am contemplating taking on a build and it is great to see how you do it

Turned some Hickory to make some ramrod stock. Made a bunch so I can cull the ones that are not straight grained. Got one sanded and fit to my project rifle.

down To the finish stages now. I sanded down the stock to 220 grit and applied 2 rounds of Birchwood Casey filler/sealer. A final sanding with 280 got it ready for tru oil finish coats (no stain). This is after 5 coats of the finish.E2E85B75-B76F-448A-93E9-649B72B37CFE.jpeg

Barrel prep went pretty fast as it was in fair shape to start with. A fine file then sanding with wet/dry 320 grit wrapped around the file prepared it for browning with plum brown. I have a couple more rounds to go with browning To get it even. My Plan is to apply cold blue over the brown. Iā€™ve been told that combination gives excellent results. Has anyone on here used that finish?15631C27-7E4F-45F8-B6ED-59C4DB4940F4.jpegFC7DDB08-F3C3-4101-9DBC-60E25B043132.jpeg2EA00BFC-5EDC-442A-97C4-5DBE2ADA697C.jpeg

Yes, that has been pointed out to me...kind of embarrassing....Iā€™ll make sure it is right when I put it back together. Really I was just testing yā€™all to see if youā€™re paying attention šŸ˜‚
thanks flintandsteel!

The stock is just about ready after 7 coats of tru oil, just need to knock down the gloss. Iā€™m going to try the stock sheen and conditioner for that. Barrel turned out nice with 3 rounds of plum brown with one coat of cold blue.7E76AB2B-723D-4D73-A4D9-B099362C40EF.jpeg

Stock Sheen will do a pretty good job of removing the high gloss finish left by the Tru-Oil but to make it work you have to rub lightly and replenish it often.

If you don't replenish it or if you rub hard, it will polish the surface to a mirror bright condition.

Finished it today!
