You can basically go as low as you want. When I opt to use mine for rabbits (just for the heck of it), I use 1 oz of #6 shot and 60 grains of 2f. It actually throws a smoother pattern than the same load in my 20 gauge.
 
On clay targets I use 3/4 ounce 8 1/2 shot over 2 1/2 drams of FFg. Works fine, patterns well in my 10 gauge.

On pheasants I use just over 1 ounce of 6 shot over 2 3/4 drams.
 
Don't go so low that your pellets won't pierce both sides a a steel can at 25 paces. That'll kill small game easily.....Tom
