You won't need to take a whole lot of wood off to make the lock look more elevated. Looks like you have enough wood to do so. There's no need to have the lock sticking way out. Just a little will look fine. Just take your time and go slow. You'll get it looking balanced.
 
So, I am out in my shop today shaping my lock panels and butt stock on my first build. A scratch build may be a little ambitious for my first attempt but I am head strong. I don't have a lot of wood for the panels and was wondering what to do next. Like magic the answer appears. The strange thing is this is not the first time this has happened, probably happened at least a dozen times as I progressed through my project. I love this board!
