Long story very short, the Tru-oil finish went wrong and took the stain and shadowing with it!
So I refinished it and put on about 8 coats of Humbrol spray acrylic Matt varnish No49 (AD6049) and this is what I got. And my ball mould came so made some ammo for it

I am over the moon with the finish, there is not a blemish in sight and very easy to do. Hopefully it will stand up over time, Hmbrol is good stuff, so fingers crossed. I will be scuffing it up with 0000 wool and giving it about 3 coats of the protective Renaissance wax, so that should help and bring a little luster to the finish. If you've not seen renaissance wax, look it up, it's good stuff
Wax and fit all the brass work back on next, then brown the barrel etc.
