The Lyman owner's manual says the maximum recommended load for this pistol is 40 grains of FFFG under a .495" ball.

I personally would start with a 2" 0.15" thickness patch and that should get you going well. You can move up to a thicker patch of the same diameter if you find your groupings aren't tight enough. I don't have a Lyman pistol (yet) but never push my other .50 pistols past 45 grains. Around 40 is pretty much optimal in my CVA pistols. As for patch, I don't hang up on that too much. I shoot thin patches (never measured them) and cut at the muzzle with .490 balls. My accuracy is fine at the hunting distances I use them for and loading is very easy.
