    YOUR projects

Ames, love the Gordon. Don't see many of those. Had one years ago. Best bird dog one could ask for. Another will be my retirement present to myself.

45 OR 50 CAL. FOR WHITETAIL DEER.

The 50 Cal is the 30-06 of muzzleloaders. Adequate for just about all but the largest of NA game but best for none. If this is your first ML, go with the 50. That said, a 45 will do just about anything a 50 can do.

Tomorrow is flintlock eve here in Pa.

I'll be out Wednesday Afternoon. In the AM going to deliver a cat to it's new home. We found a home for one of the many feral hanging around our place. Cute little bugger that is just content to sit on your lap and be petted. A bit odd for a feral thus ez to find home. Usually I just TNR...

    woodchuck and flintlock

You may very well be right Spence as I am not an expert on rodent biology. I will however proclaim that the removal of the above listed gland or lymphnodes or whatever they are does result in a more palatable meal.

    woodchuck and flintlock

the above is for ground hog/woodchuck. "marmots" prairie dog or ground squirrels- I do not know

    woodchuck and flintlock

No drawing or pics but the glands are located 1. in nape of the neck-it is the butterscotch colored mass. A lateral slice across the neck where it meets the back exposes it 2. In the armpits of the front legs-- again butterscotch colored mass. 3. Butterscotch colored mass running along inside...

    Change in POI? Causes?

Do you wear glassees? If you have progressive lenses be sure you are shooting from the same spot on the glasses. I had that problem and it drove me bonkers until I figured that one out. From what I've learned on here I wasn't the only one.

    T/C Hawken accuracy

I had a TC that drove me nuts for years until I followed the Dutch system. It worked wonders. It can now shoot sub 2" at 50 yds and probably much better if I continue experimenting with my patch lube combo. Alas time and patience say 2" is plenty for any deer I'll shoot. That shortcoming is...

    Good problem to have

Thank you for the kind words patriot. All the best to you also. Yes we are lucky to be able to enjoy our sport in a beautiful time :hatsoff: of year.

    Good problem to have

I am a subscriber of yours so thank you for shortening the learning curve. I am going to assume you are talking about the TC. I spent more effort on that rifle than I should but it made me even more determined to get it shooting. On that one I started at 50g and worked up then started using...

    Good problem to have

I have a 50 TC Flint that was a cantankerous piece to shoot accurately. After following the advice of one Dutch S. it finally shoots respectfully with about 1.5-2" @ 50 yds. With 85g FF,a 0.490 RB and a .007 patch. I found a nice 54 cal long rifle at a yard sale that needed a little a TLC that...

    Fixed Sights

Another vote for filing front sight but please make sure you are content with your load. Word of advice. Use some duck tape or masking tape around sight prior to breaking out file. You will be glad you did. Take 2 strokes off, shoot 3x and repeat til POI is where you want it. Can't put metal...

    No particular "school" builds

I'm a bit late joining this party and skimmed over most of the replies. If what I have to offer is a repeat of someone else's thoughts I apologize. Their are what are known as barn guns or schimmels (sp?) That, while not homemade or frankensteined to use a modern term, are very well made guns...

Wife wants a muzzleloader, please help

Wow. Lots of options there. Need a little refinement as to what you want. Need to look at purpose, price etc. My wife does not hunt but loves to shoot my 32 Crockett. Light no recoil easy to clean and no flash from flashpan ie cap lock. Won't win any prizes for authenticity but fits her...

Useful Information Great Day At Range

Funny this topic and up. I was shooting last week trying different patches to tighten some groups on a TC hawken. After a bit of fussing I had 3 shots inside a half dollar at 50 yd. Then while going for a repeat I couldn't keep them on the paper. What???? As a student of Dutch Schultz I knew...

Learning to live with wear and tear

Rifles are tools and are built to be used. Yes take care of your rifle so that it continues to function in the purpose for which it is built. Safe queens are for show and tell and are as useless as mammaries on a male cow.

I got a patch stuck in barrel

Similar to what was mentioned above, a generous dose ov wd-40 then heat barrel with hair drier(I don't care too much for putting water down barrel ie boiling water to heat it. Remember you will be soaking that patch and the water will be on that until it is removed The heat will expand barrel...

    Which Round Ball

Well a lot have weighed in :rotf: but few answered the question which commercial round ball has the most consistency ball to ball. I think that most here agree that cast balls are the most consistent. I can purchase those from TOW. That will be a start. For those of you that have time and...
