    Bookie's Wheelie

Hi Emory, Yes, more things are in the works for me. I'm 100% retired from the custom gun building business as of last week and that helps out the old hands, but a matchlock is on the drawing board, restocking an original Bookout flint rifle circa 1820s, and keeping my long distance apprentice...

    Bookie's Wheelie

Gents, my buttons are bustin' off my shirt. I have supplied a Swedish film company two videos of my wheellock being fired at their request. They need the actual sounds of a wheelie going through it's paces for a sound track. Matchlock Films is making two films, and they made three dummy...

    Testing pyrites

Hi gys! I had trouble with my wheelie not throwing enough sparks initially. After watching the wheel work for about a jillion times, it struck me that the notches that cross the grooves on the wheel's circumference wre not doing the job. I filed a few more notches and now, all my pyrites cut...

    another wheellie!

I'm glad for the progress, Volat'! I've been busy making 4 in 1 chain mail from 3/8" OD armor quality steel links to mount along the sides and rear rim of my spangen helm. Cheers, Bookie

Leon, one of these days, you'll be the wheelie guru of the world, well...at leastways in Jersey. Looking good, bro. Bookie

Re-bore a rifled barrel to smoothbore

Sarge, it takes me about 4 hours of cranking to ream out a barrel. I would charge you as much, if not more, than the cost of a new barrel....unless you want to come to the shop and borrow my reamer. Cheers, Bookie

    Securing the buttplate

Erzulis, the only method I have personally seen is nails with square heads or countersunk and filed off. I suspect that there are other methods used since NOTHING is always for sure with old timey guns. Cheers, Bookie

    Flintlock pistol on a budget.

Flinter, somewhere down in the deep, dank, and dark recesses of my smithy, there just MIGHT be a kit gun still in the styrofoam box that I took in on trade in the 1970s that might fill your bill. It's been so long I cain't even remember just what it is. It's Christmas, so send me an email...

DIY from scratch ... possible? References?

Aldebaran, May the Force be with you. Making a lock from scratch is easily enough accomplished, but getting the geometry correct is the killer. I would suggest that you copy a lock like a Siler for your first attempt. Hell, that's what most of the lock companies did and that's how the Siler...

WOW check out the Eng Fowler from M. Brooks!

    Tennesee Mtn. Rifle lock.

I've repaired a few of these locks over the past 35 years (this is also why that lock has a American made replacement now for about $115)and found two recurring issues. 1. The frizzen needs some kasnit to harden it better. 2. The main spring is too soft or mushy. A properly functioning...
