Actual use of a Pipe Hawk....

noworries I think that pipe tomahawks, like rifles evolved over time. Look at the very earliest pipe tomahawks like the English made one that were traded and given to the indians around the French and Indian War period. They are pretty large. I have one that was found along the Scioto River in...

    Hawk or Camp Axe

I've used mine to dress deer and remove the feet and heads from small game as well as smoking an occasional bowl of kinikinnick. The head of this one is a copy of the tomahawk given to James Galloway by Techumseh. Regards, Dave

    Golden Age Arms Co?

Jim Johnson was the owner of Golden Age Arms. He had a number of people who made guns for him over the years, and occasionally he purchased guns from makers for resale. Regards, Dave

    Flint to Perc. and back??

markd Yes, most likely the POI will change. I made up a rifle (a J P Beck style) about 15 years ago for a friend who wanted it to be convertable from flint to percussion. I used large Siler locks, and while it worked we had to work up two seperate loads. Ultimately he ended up buying a .36 cal...

Check out "How To Build The Antique Rifling Machine by Joesph Seabolt. It will be a help to you. I think Dixie Gun Works still sells this book. I have made one machine and own one original machine that I found in Eastern Kentucky many years ago. Regards, Dave

    1861 Springfield Proof Load

Zonie After reading your post I just had to get out my copies of Fuller's book again. So much info I'd forgotten. On the same note, several years ago when I proofed my last hand forged swamped barrel, I used a similar proof charge. The first load was a .58 cal and I used 300 grains of 3F under...

Antique Powder Keg from "Hazard Powder Company"

The kegs are really scarce! I have several of the tin cans from the latter part of the 19th century, one is still full of powder (about 3F grain size)that is still good. Really Old Bob, Are you referring to the old King's Mills Powder Plant just north of Cincinnati? The only thing left there is...

    how to use taps

bob243 I would recommend you pull that breechplug before you drill. Then you won't have to worry at all about an out of round hole. Then you can dish out and polish the cut out in the breechplug which will help slow down accumulation of fouling and rust in the cut out. More than likely you going...

    Trigger guard

Chris is right, good "brass" guards can be bent by hand. If it breaks it probably had a casting flaw that would have made it useless anyway. I don't recall ever have cast a guard or purchased a guard that didn't require some bending to fit the stock shape I was using. Regards, Dave

Kentucky Rifle Book in color from the 1970

undertaker Lindsay's book has color pictures but some of them are blurry. Still it is nice to see color photos of original longrifles. I bought mine "back in the day" and payed $24.00 and thought that was expensive for a book. I have since learned there is nothing more valuable in studying...

    BP on NRA indoor ranges

RetiredMedic is right. To shoot BP indoors requires a huge ventilation system that very quickly overpowers any reasonably sized HVAC system. It could be done, but the operational costs to maintain a comfortable temperature would be astronomical. Regards, Dave

    Adam Haymaker Va Longrifle

Rich You are correct. We don't see carved initials very often on longrifles, so to me they are a interesting feature. Regards, Dave

    Last Of The Mohicans

Actually the Marshall rifle is a later restock of some earlier parts. While it looks very much like what we would think a 1750's period rifle would look like, it was probably restocked in the 1760's or even the 1770's. It still generates some controversy It is still a great early style rifle...

    Adam Haymaker Va Longrifle

The original rifle was passed down through the descendants of Hancock Taylor, who was killed by Indians in Kentucky in 1774 as I recall. I think it was attributed to Adam Haymaker by Wallace Gusler. It is a truly grand rifle and balances well. A close friend made an exact copy of this rifle for...
