    Hog hunting near San Antonio?

I just found out that I will be spending a week or so next spring in the San Antonio area and I was thinking that my son and I would take our rifles along and do some hog hunting while we're out that way. Can anyone recommend a reputable outfit to hunt with in that area? I figured some of you...

    Fire safe for powder storage.

J.D.,you certainly are right,I have tested that theory. However,I have not set fire to a full can of Goex just for the hell of it. LOL!!

    Fire safe for powder storage.

It has always been my understanding that it was safest to store powder (black or smokeless) in it's original container. If you store it in a safe you have just created a bomb. In it's original container it will burn violently but you won't get an explosion as if it were "restricted" by a strong...

    removeable breech plug

Maybe,I'm the black sheep here but I find it easier to clean my hooked breech rifles than I do my rifles with removable breech plugs. With a hooked breech rifle you patch the barrel until clean, dry,& oil. With a removable plug you patch the barrel until clean, dry,& oil,and then you clean the...

    rough breech H&R Stalker

Good deal!! Sounds like you're gettin' there. Let us know how she shoots, and BTW,welcome to the addiction!!

    rough breech H&R Stalker

I am not familiar with the design of an H&R Stalker but the diameter of your barrel where the load "sits" SHOULD be the same as the rest of the barrel unless it has a patent breech design and in that case the diameter of the patent breech would be ALOT smaller than the rest of the barrel so your...

    Hunting sights

The stock T/C sights with a little white paint,white-out,or nail polish added to the round "bead" part on top of the front blade works great for me in fading light.

    Powder & Lead

I carry 4 patched balls in a ball block and 4 pre-measured powder charges in plastic tubes while deer hunting. I have a small brass priming flask with enough 4f to change my prime several times if necessary, and also carry an extra flint or 2 just in case. This is for a day hunt,if I were going...

Best sights for low light situations

As said above,a dot of white paint does the trick for me too.

How often to refresh your prime ?

Thanks again, all of this makes perfect sense. I am in eastern Va. so I will keep a close eye on it. Happy huntin' to ya'll and may the good lord take a likin' to ya!! :hatsoff:

    Missed one

I too have killed lots of deer (and other fine game as well) over the years,a couple that any man would be proud of and I still get this feeling as well. I say the day your heart stops racing when you have game in your sights is the day you have lost touch with the true meaning of the hunt.

How often to refresh your prime ?

Thanks again for all the tips!! I think I will stick with the 4F for my prime for now as I don't have range time between now and Sat. morning to test out the 3F in my rifle. That being said,I will check it often and dump if necessary. It's supposed to be a beautiful day here on Sat. so I don't...

How often to refresh your prime ?

So it sounds like,on good days,it may not be necessary at all to dump the prime? I will check it every so often to make sure it looks OK. How much better is 3F at staying dry than 4F? Is it worth switching to the 3F prime for hunting or is it not that big of a deal unless it is an overly damp...

How often to refresh your prime ?

I have quite a bit of range time with my flinter and feel very confident in it's reliability but this will be my first season hunting with it. I have searched quite a bit on the subject of flintlock reliability in damp weather and I have read where lots of folks dump their prime every hour or so...

    my ethical dillema

The most important rule in hunting (or harvesting) game is to not waste the animal. As long as you are going to eat the animal I see no harm nor foul in living off YOUR land.
