    1851 Pietta nickel/gold played "bargain"

Couple weeks back, my brother in law out in Wyoming sent me some phone pics of this gun. He was doing a deal for a pump shotgun and the seller said take the revolver along with for $100 or no deal, so he acquiesced. Knowing I do BP and he does not, my BIL offered it to me, same price plus...

Opinions on older Traditions Ardesa Hawken

Came across what is supposed to be a new in the box Traditions Hawken. This is the two keyed model with long tang and a couple of inlays on the shooter's side, same as comes up when searched as Ardesa. Haven't seen the bore but was told it is out of an estate. I could probably get it for $250...

    Colt Colt (?) Dragoon

Was in a small shop and saw a Dragoon (rounded guard) on consignment. Looked well cared for but, when I chedcked it for maker, it only had a s/n on the frame with matching last digits on butt strap, etc. I think it was just marked Colt. A clerk said it was one of a batch outsourced for Colt. He...

    Regurgatating the trash

Please refrain from commenting in the troll-related posts. Leave them buried until the mods delete them. Just my two cents.

How reasonable are current Old Army prices?

Saw one in stainless LNIB, for $600. I'd like to have one but I think I'd need two patches just to stop the nose bleed, as that is about what a nice smokeless wheel gun fetches hereabouts. Are they really worth the premium?

    Cloth patch for slugs?

Recently picked up a fast twist in .45. I ran across a box of soft lead bullets I had made up for a .43 Spanish rolling block I used to have. Wondered if I could paper patch them for the .45? They should be .439 or approximately .010 under. If it takes several turns of paper, might a greased...

Anything going on around DC this August?

Seeing as how it's the 200th anniversary of the burning of Washington and Baltimore harbor. Just finished reading By The Dawn's Early Light. Was vastly entertaining and I highly recommend it.

    Douglas barrel numbers

Just picked up a Hawken with a .54 No. 6 barrel. Anyone know their barrel marking system? Did a search but only see modern barrels. Thought you builder craftsmen might know. Thanks in advance!

    odd ball barrel wedges

Was looking over a custom Hawken and thought about pulling the barrel. Rolled it over to see the offsides of the two barrel wedges to see if it could start them out. They were darned thin and flush with the escutcheons, so I flipped it to see if I could get hold of the oval heads but there...

    Lyman target minnies

Anyone tried these in a Zouave repro? I am limited to a hundred yard range and only shoot target, plus looking for reduced recoil loads. These weigh around 325 grains. (Yeah, would search but can't figure out how to fine tune it.) Thanks in advance!

Clean out screw in breech plug

Came across a used custom Hawken today, no markings but obviously well made. Had what looked like a small set screw or Allen headed clean out screw in the flat opposite the lock. That is, not in the bolster. Anyone seen one like this before? Sure wouldn't want that to come loose and smack me...

Traditions half stock with pistol grip

This was an inexpensive English stock style sporter in 1::32 side lock, single trigger. I last saw one years ago at Kmart but thought they looked kind of nice. Anyone familiar with this model?

    Who made the Zouave copies?

I see them with many different vendors' brands. Navy Arms, Army Jaeger, CVA and Centennial (IIRC). Did Zoli contract for all and, if so, were some better than others?

    How much is too much?

Been thinking about a single shot percussion pistol. In .45 or .50, how heavy a charge do you reckon would become uncomfortable? I passed on a .58 horse pistol because most owners said it became unmanageable at about 60 grains with round ball. Impractical for minies. Saw two of the new...

Anyone tried the Hornady "PA" conicals?

Come in .50 and look stubby kind of like a Ballet. They appear to be aimed at hunters who shoot round ball twist.

    T/C kit gun markings

Was looking over a Hawken I picked up at a show. According to the seller, it is a kit gun his brother-in-law put together as he liked working in wood but never shot it. Gun is finished as nice as factory. I just noticed the s/n on the barrel is only numbers. Weren't the kit guns prefixed...

    Pyrodex CTG

Got an old full bottle of this that still ignites OK. Wondering what bore it might be good for? Is it like Fg, etc? Just going to shoot informal target with anything from .50 - .58. Have some P, too. Maybe a duplex load of CTG over P? Yeah, too cheap to use it for fertilizer.

    Ballistic Products roundballs

Fellow on an airgun forum was looking for some in .36, so I searched, thinking they would be like Hornady. Nope, these are non-lead (bismuth?) and weigh about 88% (10/cc vs 11.35/cc) of pure lead. Except for the .32 and .72, they are all undersized and there is no .50 equivalent. Not rushing...

    Where to buy musket caps?

First off, I hope this is the proper place to post. Just drove out to where I used to buy my top hats but they are out and don't know when more will come in as "those have been scarce lately". Next shop is another good hour more away. Went on line but didn't see any. Hope they aren't getting...

    BBC Series Ripper Street

Just caught a couple of episodes of this. In the first, someone used a percussion rifle with scope to shoot a horse in the head. Looking at it, I thought it was a Parker Hale Whitworth. Later, the slug is dug out, held up and, pointing out the conical base, is pronounced a Whitworth. Not so...
