    My sob story.........

You've seen 23 bucks? I've only seen one in VT, and it was in the road in front of me while driving home from hunting all day. :hmm: :haha: Well, the important thing is to enjoy yourself out there.

    Mink oil?

I know, but the law here is no land trapping after December 31st. Weasels used to be non-protected, but when they were added to the furbearer list, they fell under land trapping rules. Crazy laws.

    Mink oil?

Anything you can think of, even petroleum based ingredients.

    Mink oil?

Ermine are white weasels not mink. Well, in theory, because half of those I catch are only half white. Most mink oil sold commercially is so adulterated it's not close to pure mink oil.

    Why the hatred for CVA?

Though history isn't so clear-cut. http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/248316/ BTW: square pegs in round holes actually work good for timber framing in some cases, they're less prone to working loose.

    Any caliber too small?

Geography figures into this in my opinion. A Texas deer is generally rather small compared to, say, a big Vermont deer. I'd be willing to use something like a .36 on those tiny deer down there but I'd want something bigger here, .40 or bigger. Shot placement is always important when hunting. A...

The Modern Sidelocks Place in pre 1870 History

And a rather famous rifle, though more elaborate in many ways than the typical CVA/Traditions, also has a strikingly short forestock and one barrel wedge: http://www.museumofthemountainman.com/exhibits/scr-jimbridgerrifle.jpg

    Why the hatred for CVA?

My Traditions flintlock "Hawken" shoots as well as some more expensive guns...I tuned the lock up some so it's reliable and quick. The only thing I haven't gotten worked out of it, is it eats flints. Is it anything like a true Hawken? Nope, and I'll never claim that. However, I think it's...

1849 Colt 31 cal for self defence?

The .31 is about comparable to the .32 S&W cartridge. Not impressive, but it could be effective just the same...

The feasibility of returning to a more primitive season?

I love my muzzleloaders but I've never been one to tell someone else how to hunt. I know too many people who rely on hunting for some of their food, here and up in Alaska, for one thing. Actually I'm somewhat in that category myself but I know my hunting grounds inside and out so well I can...

    Greaseholes in the stock..like them?

I have no use for them. They make a mess, attract insects and maybe even critters while camping (I do use tallow primarily for my patch lube). I'd prefer a patchbox. I'll have the gun loaded with a lubed patch when I go out hunting or such but any reloads in the field will be done with spit on...

    Maine made flint or caplock????

There were several gunmakers in Vermont, so it seems to me there should have been some in Maine. Some of my family from the early 1800's and through the 1840's were gunmakers. There was a lot of experimenting going on in that era. One of my relatives invented a 12 shot flintlock in the early...

What movie would you like to see made?

Something good on Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. Something real accurate and complete. Something good on Jim Bridger would be nice too.

    Flying comercial with black powder

Most 20mm ammo available to civilians is non-explosive (solid projectile). Explosive rounds generally are NFA regulated and $200 tax and registration for each round, and not many dealers will sell them...

    New Black Powder coming

Elephant powder was good for making noise and smoke and fouled up barrels, and little else.

    Flying comercial with black powder

The TSA officers are not really police/LEO at all, just government baggage/passenger screeners. All federal LEO's are trained and carry sidearms, TSA officers do not. Illegal to mail powder (or any ammunition for that matter). You need to use someplace like UPS or such for it.

    double loads for bear?

Or, PRB, conical and another PRB. Or, perhaps, conical, conical, conical. Okay admittedly this is starting to sound absurd but then half the fun of a muzzleloader is thinking up new loads for it. I'm going to have to play around with some of these oddball loads. I've been tempted to...

Will a flintlock stop a bear?

It was suggested to me in Alaska that should I need to shoot one, shoot it in the head, then shoot its legs or such after that. Their heads are not bullet proof. Natives up there in the bush were carrying 30-30's all the time and felt confident they could defend themselves. I liked my 45-70...

    double loads for bear?

This is an interesting topic. I've never tried it though I have done buck and ball loads before. I wonder what would happen if you put a patched ball over a conical?

How to clean a long rifle?

You can just send some patches soaked in hot, soapy water down with a rod and work them in and out and do it until they come out clean, then send some dry patches down to dry it. You may want to take the lock off and double check you're not getting anything (fouling, etc.) behind it.
