What do you keep in your patchbox?

OK, I'm a newbie, but not an idiot. I know it's for patches, but that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Why single out patches, of all "possibles", for an inletted brass box in your gun stock? Why not just keep them in your bag? Besides, when I need a patch, the butt is on the ground and the barrel charged with powder. I guess I could get the patch out first, but then what do I do with it while I'm measuring powder? It would make sense to put caps in it, but I'd rather use a capper, which won't fit, and besides, I'd be worrying about a bunch of loose caps rattling around during recoil.

For the life of me, I can't figure out what this is for. Pocket change? Chewing tobacco? Lip balm?

Any good ideas? :winking:

i personally keep my rod attachments for cleaning

on the flinters, a spare flint with the leather glued on...saves fumbling in the bullet bag for the flint wallet if I'm on the firing line and a problem[url] develops...in[/url] the percussion guns, the gizmo that screws onto the end of the rod for cleaning patches...have never used it, but that's what I keep there..Hank

I don't keep anything in mine...haven't even opened it in years. I suspect that a lot of the originals weren't used much either. Those that were probably were used to store patch grease.

Two spare flints and two balls, all wrapped in a strip of patching tick. The ball puller and the cleaning jag (wrapped in tow).

Seems a lot of old patch boxes were never used much. Think guys 200 years ago put em on rifles just because the liked the way they looked? :shocking:

Nothing that makes noise, I make enough, I don't need my Zouave to add to it...

I have carried char cloth in mine, also a roll of patching material from time to time...

Pieces of paper with details of the gun's preferred loads.

I have seen several originals with patches in them along with caps and one had a nipple. Guess some were used for what they are named for. What do I use mine for, spare ball, ball puller,patch or two. The best I think for us old farts, would be name, address, and phone # so we could get help if needed. It's a bad feeling to find a person with no ID in the woods and they can't help. Beside if your rifle gets lost it might find its way back home. I seem to find lost articles about 2 or 3 times a year and some go home and some end up in the garage. Mark you gear and the patchbox will get looked into because most people are curious about what is in them.

I will also go with the AIR entry. Mine are there just for esthetic purposes. I'm not even sure they even open.

I think Silverfox especially might be on to something. After a long day in the woods, it might be handy to look in there and find a note saying "Go home already, it's dinnertime!"

I have never really used mine. In fact, I see them as so useless, that on my wheellock it is a phoney. I carved it right onto the stock. There is no recess under the lid. It is solid with the stock. It looks like sliding wooden lid fit very tightly, but is is just a lump of wood sticking out of the stock. :crackup: :crackup: :crackup: :crackup: :shocking: :shake: :nono: :shocking: :what:
