Will PA conicals lead the barrel

Depends on the speed up to 1200-1300 feet per second should be fine after that leading is likely. Bob

45 Cal Douglass xx Barrel- Ball/Patch Suggestion

There was a thread a while back that mentions that Golden Age Arm specificly ordered their .45 cal Douglas barrels at 1-48. Mine is marked GAA (golden Age Arms) and G.R. Douglas and I measure it at 1-48. Bob

45 Cal Douglass xx Barrel- Ball/Patch Suggestion

I have a Golden Age Arms rifle with a 44inch, 1-48 twist, 3/4 on the flats, G.R.Douglas Barrel. It loves .445 hornady swaged rb .018 spit patched pillow ticking 60gns Swiss 3fff for 50yrd targets, a very plesant load to shoot and it will clover leaf when I do my part well. I have not had the...

    bullet selection help

Chainsaw, As has been pointed out .50 cal rifle bullets are usually .510-.512 and would need to be sized down in a press in stages. I did find a 420 gn .501 pistol bullet at Hunter Supply. The lenth on this would be very close. They come lubed and i would use a felt wad over the powder...

    bullet selection help

Jacketed sabots are worth a try but are outside the area of discussion on this forum. I use pure lead conicals. And try to keep velocity below 1200 fps to prevent lead fouling. The lenth of bullet for .50 cal i come up with are 2 inch bullet 1-19 1-1/4 inch bullet 1-30 1 inch bullet 1-37.5...

    bullet selection help

The length for a 1-32 at 1100 Fps is 1.25. Shorter bullet will work with light loads longer with heavy load the is ballpark and look up greenhil.

    bullet selection help

The 1.25 is overall bullet length and doesn't account for grooves or nose type. Still 1.25 with grooves will be in the ball park. Google Greenhill and rifle twist for info. Also check out Idaho Ron's posts on paper patching. Bob

    Touch Hole?

Dan, I think your comments are right on the money. Has anyone tried titanium for a liner? I have a project percussion to flint convertion with a 10mm x 1.25 and the only flat head bolt i could find to make the touch hole liner was titanium from its properties is seems it should be fine but...

    TC Peep sight.

Don. Thats great info and great accuracy. I have a project hawken in the works with an Ed Rayl 34 inch 1-22 twist barrel and I plan to use the Gould 330gn hollow point express bullet (lyman Bullet # 457122). I plan to use the Gould bullet in solid lead and keep the velocity between 1100 and...

    TC Peep sight.

Ron, Looks like a nice set up with some extra knock down power. How was the the load development on the paper patch bullet are they hard to load? Did you go through a lot of trial and error? Any problem with key holing? What load did you end up with and what kind of groups velocity ect...? Hows...

    bullet selection help

The thing about conicals in muzzleloaders is they are a little tougher to stabilize than round balls, you never see a baseball wobble in flight but think football. Since we load down the muzzle we are loading a land sized projectile unlike a cartage rifle where the bullet is much closer to...

    bullet selection help

With a 1-32 a solid lead conical with a lenth of 1.25 inch at about 1100 feet per second is about optimal in .50. The Great plains and minis would probable need a light load and the round ball even lighter. My guess is 1.25 lenth with about 70 grns 2ff black should be tight to load. Many casters...

Aperture sights on American longrifles - again

It seems that the progression of rifle sights goes back and forth the early frech target rifles being a very interesting example. Closer to home the 18th century jaeger rifles is the predesesser of the long rifle. A barrel is is or isn't accurate all the other parts help us or hurt us in...
