    Conicals in a Plains Pistol

I have shot everything that Black Jack Hill carries, out of my .50 Plains Pistol. Including the 533grain REAL bullet over 40 grains. Reciol is indeed quite stout. But I've shot over 200 conicals over 40 grains of powder (pyrodex RS and Goex clear shot). Buffalo Ballets, Hornady Great Plains...

    HELP!!! brush came apart!!!

For awhile I used a aluminum shotgun rod for cleaning. The jag with a patch got stuck, because the thread gave out. I slid some tubing over the drum, with the cleanout screw removed, hose-clamped it, and hooked up to the air compressor, it took 160psi to blow it out, however.

    Percussion cap substitute

You could also get/have made one of the shotgun primer nipples, and these click here But I dont think they'd fit and work on a revolver?

    Percussion cap substitute

What about berdan primers? The ones in old military ammo that have no anvils. I know we have a hard time getting them here, but I've read they are easy to get in europe, so perhaps Africa as well?

    Informal conical testing

I might just have a winner. I shot the 360gr minies at 40, 45 then 47.5 (halfway between the 45 and 50 on my measure). I didnt want to go 50, but wanted to try a bit more than 45. Again, they didnt like 40. That seems to be the case with this gun, the more powder the better they shoot. And so...

    Traditions Kentucky Pistol

Here is a set of pages I found useful. Describes what the writer had to do to build a Traditions Trapper. I built a Lyman Plains Pistol from the kit, so I did a buncha reading before I got it... turns out I only needed to fit a little of the lock, everything else fit fine from the factory...

    why not oak?

Ok, what about hickory? I can get hickory all ready to make into hammer handles (waxed ends, kiln dried, everything) and in large enough peices to make a stock out of. And cheap as well.

    Informal conical testing

Todays: Here for a larger image Shot at 35, 40, and 45 grains of pyrodex R/S, crisco lube, Lyman Plains pistol and RWS caps. 25 yards. Gun didnt seem to like these, couldnt cover any of the groups with a 8 1/2x11 sheet of paper. Recoil wasnt bad. They loaded good, about what I prefer...

    Informal conical testing

Heres some stuff I tried a few weeks ago, as well as some patches. For larger image click here Tomorow, if the weather is good, I'll be shooting the 320 grain R.E.A.L.'s. http://blackjackhill.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_7&products_id=26 First at 40 grains...

    Informal conical testing

Yeah, so I got some of everything Black Jack Hill's has on thier website (and somethin they dont). Gonna try them all out of my Plains Pistol, then I'm gonna hunt with whatever shoots good enough. So while I'm at it, and because I like looking at expanded bullets, I'm diggin some of everything...

    Removing Tru-Oil

I tried gloves once but found it a pain. When the Tru-oil gets even a little tacky the gloves stick to the peice your working on, making a funny pattern in the finish as well... like you've got clear cling-wrap on it or something.

    Removing Tru-Oil

I use dish soap and water. But it comes of pretty hard. I guess I wouldnt recomend it for regular use on skin, but acetone removes even dried tru-oil from metal.

    Low tech patch making tool.

I made a wad cutter for reloading .410 shells out of a 7.62x54r case. Cut it off just below the neck, cut off the bottom/primer end as well. Then I stuffed one of them rubber expanding drums that the sandpaper rings go on from a dremel tool, tighten the screw down from the other end. For easy...

    Great Plains trigger pull?

Mine was decent from the factory, fairly light with minimal creep. But I uh, flung that sear spring across the room. Never did find it. I find that your standard VHS tape player (aka VCR) has many tiny springs, pushers, pullers, all kinds. So I disasemble and broken VCR to get the springs. And...

What went wrong with this browning?

Mine looked like that on the 2nd coat. More coats got it a bit darker. But my problem with LMF was that I couldnt get it as dark as I wanted... maybe a coca-cola color was as dark as I got? I was goin for semi-smooth, milk chocolate color. I tried a buncha things to get it in a humid area. None...
