since my journey back into traditional muzzleloading this site as well as the awesome members have helped me so much, this has become a addiction. I know have bullet casting set up and 200 lbs of lead from roto metals. while I do shoot patched roundballs some. when I hunt I use conicals. ive successfully made good lube out of beeswax and lard mix. I use wonder wads behind every caliber I shoot recommended by several members. would the lee alox be a good lube if I use a wonder wad or will my bore be leaded?

I've settled on it as the best lube going for the Lee REAL with its shallow grooves (50, 54, and 58 caliber). Just put your REALs in a ziploc, pour in a little liquid Alox. Slosh the REALs around, then lay them out base-down to dry. Keep the leftover Alox sealed in the bag. Once the REALs are dry, put them back in the bag and maybe add a little more Alox for another quick coat, then set them out to dry again.

The Alox eases handling messes when you carry the REALs into the field. Better yet, the REALs shoot great with it. The Liquid Alox also works well on the "Hornady Great Plains" equivalent bullets you can cast with Lyman molds in 50 and 54 caliber. It's worked well with the pair of Lee minies I have cast with it. Dunno about Lyman Minies because I never got around to trying it.

There appear to be a whole lot of theoreticians out there quick to condemn it. Far as I can tell not a man jack among them has actually used it. The other folks I know who actually use it love it.

I have never tried it with a BP ML.

I do use it on my 38-55 pure lead conicals for my lever rifle and I like it. No sign of leading.

Thank you men, that's what I was hoping to hear, just ordered a couple bottles of it. I do enjoy making my own lube but hunting in the summer time in texas makes the lube a gooey mess ill get some reals casted up and alox lubed and ill report back

I shoot almost exclusively the patched round balls. However, I do occasionally shoot a conical such as the T/C Maxiball or similar conicals. I have tried several different lubes and my experience has been that if I want to carry them pre-lubed in my pouch, Alox has been my favorite lube because it is no where as messy as other lubes. It seems to work just fine and I have had no bad experiences with it and no particular leading problems in my bore. I'd say that if it works for you as well as it has for me and several others who have responded to your post you ought to go ahead and use it.

Thank you men, I'm waiting on a couple more molds to come in then I'm gonna start I got 200 lbs of lead to use I bought from roto metals

It has been said that you shouldn't use Alox on MLs because you will get a gummy baked on buildup inside your barrel when fired. Some people report having this and some do not. I have never tried it myself but from what I gather it seems the people that have had problems fired allot of heavy loads between cleanings so I am thinking when fired allot between cleaning eventually it build up making it difficult to clean. Also not much is needed and some people put it on heavier than needed, I generally would thin it down some as it is very thick, especially when it has been sitting on the shelf awhile.

I have used Alox in center fire reloading and have since quit using it because I am tired of the mess. It gets on everything especially the reloading equipment. Care can be used when using it to make it less messy but it slowed me down to the point of why am I using it when there are other alternatives. I may try it some day on conicals though to see how it does. Some people like the dust their bullets with talc after coating to cut down on the stickiness. Also some have mixed Alox 50/50 with JPW, (Johnsons Paste Wax) which also cuts down on stickiness and works just as well. I have tried that and it worked for me.

If you are going to use ALOX (and I use a lot of it for casting pistol bullets and lubing) go to http://www.lsstuff.com/store/ and order a jug of XLOX, same stuff, just not infringing on LEES trademark. A 32 oz jug of it is less than 20 bucks.
I make lube for gooved bullets with Alox, beeswax (from RandyRat) and a touch of Carnuba red, (Also from Lsstuff). I don't get buildup in any of my guns I shoot them in, including small and large rifle calibers.

I've used Alox for decades in a luber/sizer for modern cartridges. Tried some on my Lee Improved Minies & was one of those who got the nasty, baked-on residue. I'd always been told not to use petroleum lubes for black powder & apparently the nasty baked on residue is why.

I've read of many black powder reloaders who use "JPW" mixed with a little naphthalene or even mineral spirits to thin & then Tumble Lube in a covered plastic container. Finally found out that 'JPW' is Johnson's Paste Wax. I not only use it on my Minies, but also on the cast bullets for .45-70 reloading.

No problems with any residue or crud build up.
