Can only speculate safety precautions were not followed. e.g. poor quality barrel steel, too thin barrel wall, overcharged, smoke less powder used, etc. But, to me, the "peel back" part is puzzling. Methinks a weak cannon barrel would shatter rather than peel. I dunno. Just guessing. Need an expert to chime in.
