clean out screw

:shake: There is no such thing as a "clean out screw". That little screw on the side of a patent breech s~Snip~

:dead:

I wondered when this would come up.. It may not technically be called that, but those of us who have one call it that and often use it for that so.. IMHO it's a cleanout screw..

Remember this is a "do yer own thang game" (where have I heard that before?)

And FYI it is tons easier to remove the clean out screw and dribble in powder than to remove the nipple

Yes, "yer own thang" is (sorta) right. I find removing the nipple to be very simple and gives a much larger access to the flash channel than that little side screw. Plus, I have seen many-many of those little screws badly buggered up because they seem to be made of very soft steel and require a properly fit screwdriver which many do not have. But, each to his own. :v

I have to swab mine between shots for the accuracy to stay true, so I've pushed fouling down a few times that causes it to not go off. Every time this has happened I've been able to remove the nipple and just put some 2f in (don't have any other kinds of powder), and it has worked every single time to date.
I think I'll start pouring in my powder charge before swabbing to see how that works.

I have bought several used guns where the clean out screw is rusted in. Usually nvestarms guns. I drill them out and retap to a 6/32 thread and use a stainless steel socket screw to plug the hole.

I remove them when cleaning the gun and coat them with grease when they go back in. Same with the nipple. They never stick after that.

I take them out and lube it. In my Lyman hand book it is called a cleanout plug. page 22 part #9. You do not have to take them out to clean, but I do. I have been doing this 2000 and have had no problems with wear. Mark (It is a GPR in .54)

I prefer the direct route vs the left turn route so I use the clean out screw. I have changed the screws to hex bolt type on most my guns cuz YEP they strip real easy or you scratch stuff and gouge flesh sometimes with them softy Italian and Spanish metal screws.

It came with two, Lyman and Investarm s. p. a. If you by a new Lyman or Traditions you get manual with them. I have bought 3 Lyman and 4 Traditions and each came with a manual. T/C also come with a manual, when they use to make real muzzleloaders that is. They do have good info in them to get started, but not as good as you can get here. My TVM fowler did not come with one. Mark

I just use Pyrodex RS because that’s what I have. I also put powder in there when loaded for hunting loads.
I have yet to have a miss fire while hunting yet but I’m a newbie to this but have learned a lot from others here.
Saved me some headache’s
