Hello Daryl , hope all is well. The head does not slide onto the handle, it is tightly fitted and wedge to the top of the handle.
 
I have one of his tomahawks - just like this one. It is a dead ringer for dug examples. I know he put a ton of research into recreating the best representation of a weapon that was carried by virtually everyone on the frontier. Not too many folks out there making these - at least not this accurate.
