My son and I went deer hunting near Great Falls, Montana. I wanted to shoot a deer with a muzzle loading pistol. We spotted a doe [legal] in the shadows down toward the bottom of a ridge. I calculated that she was about fifty yards away, held high to allow for drop. When the smoke cleared my son was laughing heartily. "Dad," he said "that gal was only about fifty feet away, the shadows fooled you. You punched a perfect hole through her ear." I never did kill a deer with a pistol.
