My family took a vacation to Vermont. One place we visited is the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, LCMM.org. they are a group that is working to preserve the history of Lake Champlain. They have made battier and a replica of the Philadelphia, one of Benedict Arnold's ships at Valcour Island in 1776. They are trying to map all the wrecks in Lake Champlain, mind you the lake is 120 miles long and several wide.
It is a very neat place to visit. They also are a good resource for learning skills. The museum offers classes on blacksmithing, boatbuilding and kayaking to name a few.
