I sewed a deerskin headband into a heavy felt low-crowned, broad-brimmed hat I bought from James Townsend. To disguise the heavy linen thread I used, I dabbed it with black ink to match the hat. But I got to wondering whether hat bands were at all common on these 1700s hats. If so, what would they have been made of?

Myne is a rattlesnake I kilt,skinned,soaked in
gliserine [spel] and folded around a strip of
canvas..On a black hat??? WOW. Period?? maybe
not...

Mine is just a three string braid of hemp twine,When I got done braiding it I singed off the loose threads an stuck a partridge feather in er...Mark

Mine's just an old length of leather strap with holes in it. Maybe off of an old harness or somethin'.

I have strands of hair from three virgins, red head, blond, and brunet braided together into a hat band.

Claud, you are a rascal, sir.
Got to thinking that as the hat is still too big, I could put on a band of wet rawhide then wear the hat in the sun till she shrinks tight. But then I might not get it off ... :rotf:

I had a hatband from Rawhide but my dog kept stealing it a chewing it up. Thats when I went to using the hair.

Catch ya a live rattler & knot him round your hat, the dog'll leave it alone, and so will everyone else LOL :haha:
