I used to be a firearms salesman for Cabela's. I would try to serve everyone within my scheduled shift before we closed. The unwritten rule amongst us employees was "no new gun sales 30 minutes before closing" on account of not being able to properly get through 4473 background check paperwork on time. Before we leave, (at least at our location)all the firearms must be taken off the sales floor and gun library and put on carts and stowed in the vault(secured backroom). However we would constantly have customers come in at the last 5 minutes and want to start paperwork, delaying us from closing up. Sometimes we were able to say no, other times not. We are not commission based and don't make anymore money selling one more gun, we are hourly and not normally approved overtime. What this caused unfortunately is employees having to quickly load the carts to get out on time by SLAMMING guns on them as fast as they can. Which in turn, scratches them up and damages the finish of a brand new firearm. I've seen some people try to go so fast they drop the guns and they hit the hard counters on the way down. Moral of the story, look carefully at firearms from Cabela's/ Bass Pro when purchasing.

You make a good point that any purchase should be looked over carefully with out rushing. And it helps if you know what to look for!
 
Sounds as if they had an employee problem. It doesn't take any more time being careful than reckless. I was a firearm inventory specialist and worked sales when needed. Seems the older employees cared more about there job where as the younger did not.

I paid them to work there actually, drove 150 miles round trip and bought an incredible amount of firearms and hunting related stuff. When I left there the store and firearms manager was sad because they were losing a good customer.

Back in the day a customer could return firearms and ammo. The ammo could not be sold to the public but employees could buy it for literally pennies on the dollar. Heck I had to buy guns for the cheap ammo I bought.😃

Honestly, we had the opposite issue, the older guys at my job were the ones who were pushing to get out on time. I also constantly witnessed them chit chatting the customers more than focus on the selling to "run out the clock" on their shift even though we had people waiting to be served. Had one employee flat out tell a guy who'd waited 45 mins+ "we're closed, go home!" Because it was 5 minutes after closing.
