A change in job duties means I will be traveling extensively and as such, time to build a rifle will be zilch.
On the block is a Don Stith parts set for a pre '49 J&S half stock.
Walnut stock.
1 1/8"(1.115) to 1"(1.010) tapered 34.75" long .58 caliber Rice square rifled barrel.
Davis Hawken lock.
Roller triggers.
Barrel has been breeched, lightly draw filed and hit with 220 grit paper.
Barrel is let in to the stock but tang has not.
Fit and lock up of tang/breech is perfect.
In the interest of full disclosure- while starting to bend the tang(hot) to fit the wrist a crack developed in the tang. Upon investigation a void in the casting was present. The void was opened up and ground out. Tang was pre heated and TIG welded with 70S rod. Weld is perfect with no porosity, needs a little file work but aside from that is undetectable.
This is the only work that has been done to the parts set.
Includes Don's drawing of the completed rifle.
