Guys: Its called a Fire Piston, and works on the principle of compression of gas. Unlike the barrel of a flintlock or percussion gun, there is no escape valve, or hole in the bottom to relieve the pressure. The pressure has to be very high to produce the fire. I have one, and after some practice can usually have a glowing ember in my tinder by my third attempt. I am still faster using flint and steel, And almost as fast using a bow and drill ( spindle) for firemaking. If you check TrackerTrail.com, there is an entire list of primitive ways to start fire, and comments or articles on each of them.

Tis the same principle applied for fire pistons. I know a home made fire piston will set off match heads with a bang, don't ask me how I know. :(
