    Adjusting trigger pull weight

I have a pistol which has a wildly heavy trigger. Has to be more than 20 lbs. The lock is pictured. Which spring needs to be adjusted in order to lower the trigger pull weight?

Who is making a .58 caliber Flintlock pistol? I have a yen. Pete

    sources for smoothbore pistols

I have developed an itch for a smoothbore flint pistol. Recommendations for such? Thanks in advance. Pete

    trigger spring

I have a couple of Hopkins and Allen underhammer pistols. One of them needs an internal trigger spring. Anyone know a source? Numrich Arms is (and has been) sold out. I can make one, I suppose, but am feeling lazy and for a couple or three dollars would prefer to buy. I have contacted...

    Cut lead bar bullets

I did a search for this topic and came up with nothing....a bit surprised about that. In any case, if this is not old news, what do y'all think about this idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwhmk-4bDS4 Pete

    Cutting the sprue

Just received a mold from Jeff Tanner in the UK....a beautiful brass object to cast LRBs for my smoothbore. The mould has no sprue cutter. So.... what are some effective ways to cut the sprue and not ruin the accuracy of the ball. Help. Pete

    Mortar

Nice job on the trunnions and the elevation mechanism. Sadly, the tube itself....if it is welded at all.....is the weak point. Also, the tube need not be that long. Soda can and golf ball mortars are typically quite short. When you do make another, keep DOM tubing in mind and avoid the welds in...

    Carving an shovel for ashes

The homes near my place in Brooklyn, NY are all from the middle 19th Century (mine was built in 1847). Any time there is work done on them, some pretty old stuff comes out. Lead pipe is common. The other day I passed a pile of wood that was being discarded. I took piece of what had been a...

how many patches to a clean barrel?

I have been meaning to ask this question for a while now. We read, often on this forum, about proper cleaning methids. Frequently shooters will mention that they use just a few patches to get their barrels clean. Three to six is common. I wonder what I do wrong when I read that as, fowler or...

    Made a Noggin

Made another Kuksa/noggin. This one is from a piece of cherry burl. The burl was from a long dead cherry and, unfortunately, had a lot of insect damage. I'm not sure that it will hold a liquid - we'll see - but I learned a lot when I was making it.

    dimples on a round ball?

I just read a post on another forum written by a fellow who loads his.600 rbs without a patch. He "dimples" them with a rasp before loading ala golf ball dimples. He found improved accuracy from his gun. Has anyone here tried this? I tried a search for this "dimpling" idea on this forum but...

    wasp nests

I managed to harvest two fair sized wasp's nests today. How does one go about using the stuff - in Fowlers, and SXSs....for game primarily. How much to use?

Nice day with the fowler and clay birds

It's been a long time coming.... for the first time since I started shooting the thing, I used my 20 ga. fowler for some informal trap shooting. I have a foot operated trap, a few boxes of clays and there was no one up at North Mt. range. No one but me. The most effective load - I hit every...

    Nipple size?

A Navy Arms 12 gauge SXS by Pietta. The proper nipple size is....what? Thanks in advance. Pete

    raising POI with a Fowler

I was shooting yesterday - a nice day at the range. One of the guns was my .62 Fowler. I was shooting PRBs - .600 dia. with a 0.015" patch and 70 grains of FFg Goex. I was shooting off hand. Grouping was fine but the groups were low. This has been the situation with PRBs and the Fowler since...

    10 ga. SXS proof pressure?

There was/is a post on another forum from a fellow who is considering buying a Pedersoli 10 ga. SXS for hunting. He wanted to know what the loads were. He'd like to use "two or three" ounces of shot. He was also thinking that maybe smokeless would work. I noted that that was a bad idea. I...

    drilling out a nipple

Quick question. Would there be any problem resulting from enlarging the spark channel in a nipple by drilling it out? I read repeatedly about shooters enlarging the vent/touchhole on flintlocks. What about making a nipple channel about the same size, about 1/16"? I wonder if the "blowback" would...

    Greyhaven pistol

Here's a picture of a .50 cal underhammer by Bob Worthington at Greyhaven Arms. It's on its way into my hands. Twelve inch fire blued barrel. Looking forward to doing some shooting. Pete [/img]

    Game trail

I couldn't resist this picture. I have often been told, when I try to explain how thick some of the upland cover is around here and why it would be nice to have a shorter barreled fowler (as opposed to the 42 incher) to work through it, that what I need to do is use the same trails that the game...

SXS - how do you deal with the second shot?

This, I suppose, is a technical question. Scenario: I'm hunting grouse. I have a 12 ga. Navy Arms SXS. The dog goes on point. I approach, cocking the right barrel hammer as I do. What about the left barrel? Do you cock both at the same time? Or do you cock again if a second shot is needed...
